SOCOM is one of the reasons why I brought my first Playstation. The characteristics of this game to me are the firefights, situations/game modes, and tactical thinking you need to play this franchise in single, co-op (I hope they bring back the 4 player co-op from Combined Assault), and multiplayer. Also the advanced options in multiplayer mode like creating your own public room for anyone to find, voting to kick players off your team (popular when people brought out M203's in foxhunt lol) and specific clan match servers.

    Review/Advice/Info:
My first impression of the beta was that it was pretty detailed visually. Seemed like they took a lot of time crafting the objects you can hide behind and creating small areas that you can use as cover to snipe or surprise your enemy, as well as trying to keep the look of some previous maps from older games.

The way you move around might not be natural for some people, it was for me being that I prefer all looking around controls to be on one analog stick and the other for just movement (Forward/back/strafe). In the past they always had schemes to allow players to split these movements so I would hope for other people that they bring that back (but I do think this is the way most shooters are/should be except for needed to invert the look controls). I really suggest that anyone playing this (new or old) do check the look speed in the options menu (select) as in previous SOCOM's this was something crucial to how comfortable and fast you could respond to multiplayer action

Next is where I got upset. Shooting, aiming down the sights, throwing grenades, and the overall over the shoulder camera. I want to state that I am biased due to the older SOCOM games (I, II, III, & Combined Assault) being what I think all 3rd person shooters should use as a guide. The camera angle is closer to the player than I would like, this really shows in some situations when you are hiding behind something and you cannot see/move correctly to peek and shoot from cover. Something I'll just have to get used to. Shooting from the hip and aiming also plays into this issue with movement as they have kind of taken away the smooth aiming they used to have...along with repetition, I'm thinking it may get easier as my fav guns get different scopes.

Throwing grenades have almost been something Zipper has changed in every game. This time there is large adjustment to throwing grenades (especially when you want to throw them through windows/down to lower areas). Keep in mind that your throws may go higher than you aimed...so make sure you have room to run if you miss throwing it through that 2nd floor window.

I admit though that from this point I realized that I would probably need to re-adjust my skills from having played COD for so long while waiting for this game. But I'm excited to see the full multiplayer mode and also to play the single player mode as Zipper always comes up with great action, scenarios, and cutscenes. If you are not feeling the Beta, I would say give it a some more time to try it out. Find games like Last Defense and Bomb Squad to explore, try out guns and adjust. Also keep in mind that the mods bring the guns to the full potential so you need to kill people with the guns to force them to upgrade. Did I mention that I hope they bring the co-op mode back...the special objectives modes from Combined Assault with the enemies in all black not only were fun but also challenging as I think they had a great A.I. system.

Sorry so long...shout out to everyone from Socom II, III, and C.A.

I've played the beta a little bit, and I've enjoyed the time I've played it. Think I just might go play it now. It looks great, and plays very solidly overall, though there are some small issues. This isn't something I'd really rush out to buy on day one, though if Mortal Kombat and Portal 2 weren't coming out on the same day as this, I'd definitely consider getting it (I'm waiting for an Amazon sale on it). It's no COD killer, but it's a really good diversion.

I haven't even finished downloading this demo yet, and I already am regretting it. Two flipping hours to download a demo? Sony get real. If you don't want people buying this game, then why did you waste mega millions on it? I was a big fan of SOCOM. ON THE PS2!! I have been waiting for this game to come out since I played (the dismal) Confrontation. Now I'm not sure I want to waste $60 on this gamble. I'm gonna go play Black Ops now. I hope this doesn't waste two more hours of my time.

As others have said, be warned, it takes forever to download. It is a 2 gig download and then when it starts up it wants to download another 1.5 gig. What is worse is I waited for 10 minutes on the second download and it had only downloaded 4 mb. Long story short, I got mad and deleted it without ever playing it.

As someone who has never played a SOCOM game before, I honestly have enjoyed the beta so far. As I expected, I kind of suck at it. But as I am slowly getting the hang of things and getting into firefights, the more enjoyable the game is becoming. So far, it's a pretty cool game.

Let me warn you if you have not played it yet, its nothing like past SOCOMS, if you were a SOCOM fan (even before the glitchy mess of Confrontation) it is a totally different game, the game actually reminds me of Ghost Recon, but all in all i thought it was a good game and i would by it, its a beta so obviosly things are not perfect or fixed yet, I am a huge SOCOM fan and after playing all the past games i think Zipper this time wanted to move on and create a more updated play style, thats just me though

I quite enjoyed the beta thus far. It's not perfect, but it's pretty darn good. Nostalgia washed over me, as I experienced the same enjoyment as I did playing the original CS. This is a tactical shooter with very good graphics and gameplay mechanics.

    Highs:
    - Amazing/detailed graphics
    - Tactical Shooter that relies on positioning, planning and teamwork
    - No/Minimal lag, as far as I can tell
    - Interesting play modes, such as 'Bomb Tech'

    Lows:
    - Using the DS3, I've found the deadzones to be a bit too tight. The controls aren't as smooth as Uncharted 2. It almost feels like it has the input lag from KZ2. Turning up the sensitivity alleviates the problem slightly. Once you get use to it, it's not so bad. After all, everybody is playing with the same disadvantage.
    - Steep learning curve; could be daunting to beginners or gamers new to the genre

There are people who love the beta, people who hate it, and people who are neutral. My suggestion is ignore all reviews for now and try the beta yourself. This way you can form your own opinion. After all, the beta is free. :) Of course, the download time is quite lengthy. That is no fault of Zipper, as the final game will be distributed via BluRay and not over the air.

I was really excited to try this beta/demo out when I got the beta code with my copy of KZ3 but was very disappointed. I was bored with it in about 30 minutes which was about a 4th of the time it took to download, install and update. I'm sure there are a lot of people that really enjoy it but I found it to be far behind other third person shooters with mp.
