UPDATE 4.21.2011 11:06 AM: PSN Down Again, Sony references possible attacks. Also: Since the PlayStation network is down, here's a list of what you can still do with your PlayStation 3.
The PlayStation Network is down for unplanned maintenance while various Sony websites, like the PlayStation Blog, have been down for most of the day. Several hours before the PSN and Sony websites reported loading issues the hacker collective Anonymous issued a statement to Sony in regards to their actions against hackers, specifically GeoHot. Anon has not taken credit for an attack and Sony has yet to confirm there has been an attack at all.

Many are wondering if these outages are related to the statement from Anonymous. An official PlayStation twitter account acknowledged there were problems with the PSN, "PSN currently undergoing sporadic maintenance. Access to the PSN may be interrupted throughout the day. We apologize for any inconvenience." Reports of problems connecting to the PSN began after the statement was posted and as of now it seems to be functioning again.
Anonymous called out Sony specifically for their treatment of the hacker GeoHot who Sony has been involved with in a civil case. They site issues with Sony's access to personal information from those who viewed the video of the hack or who visited GeoHot's website.

Do you think Anon is attacking Sony or is this all a coincidence?

In my opinion, (which will probably be looked down upon, or thumbed down, which is something I expect, but welcomed since that is your right), "Bad" Hackers like this "Anon" group are no better than terrorists who attack people and their family and property to get what they want because they disagree that someone is being punished when they broke the law.
What I am understanding is that this man that Sony is prosecuting broke the law by doing something he wasn't supposed to with their property. Yes, I am aware he owns the PS3 system he bought, and I agree if you own something you should have the ability to do what you wish BUT only as long as what you do is affecting only you, and not anyone else.
The man simply broke the law. And if he didn't, then the courts will rule in his favor and we can go about our lives whether you're a gamer or not.
Now, as for the issue with most people's PS3s (including mine) being unable to access PSN, I sympathize with you. It sucks, I know. But it is not Sony's fault. If this is truly the work of hackers, they should be the attention of your discontent, not Sony. Sony is doing what they can to fix this.
Anon and other Hacker groups who don't put their exceptional skills to good use, like helping build better firewalls and anti-virus software. But instead choose to waste theirs and everybody's time and money by attacking companies and their workers and families, cyber attack or otherwise, to get what they want, are low-life criminals who are little better than Terrorists. (Even though what they are doing can be considered Cyber-Terrorism).
Anyway, that is just my thoughts on the matter. Please respect them. If you don't agree, I respect that. If you do agree, thank you for seeing things from my perspective.

Sony: Here buy this system, but if you do anything with it other than what WE intend you'll be in big trouble.
If Anonymous is behind this then Sony deserves it.

First of all, while I don't agree that GeoHot should be sent to jail or anything, I would make the case that what he/failoverflow did and anonymous is doing is wrong. What GeoHot did wrong is hacking the system incorrectly. He didn't have to publicize and make it as widespread and create problems for Sony and quite frankly Infinity Ward/Activision who probably lost a sale or two on those overpriced map packs. I ask if he is such a good hacker why not just keep the pre-other os removal firmware and create hacks that allow games to be play without updates, perhaps finding some cool way to exploit the system using a thumb drive or something.
Another thing is that if you wanted to hack your ps3 right you still probably could. Things posted on the internet don't just go away. Just don't get on PSN and ruin the fun for others. A common misconception is that when you buy a ps3, you are also buying guaranteed access to PSN. According to the Terms of Service, the Playstation Network is a service that at any time Sony can deny the consumer for any reason they can come up with.
Besides violating a man's privacy which Sony worked around the law with the GeoHot having a psn thing, they've done nothing wrong from a legal standpoint and Anonymous should not shutting down people access to psn when they could be screwing with Sony stock numbers causing sony to lose investors which hurts Sony and not the consumer who has nothing to do with it.
GeoHot/failoverflow should at least get a slap on the wrist for allowing all this happen. What they did is almost the equivalent of yelling fire in the theater, with the people getting stepped are the consumers, the hackers are the people yelling fire, and sony is the theater owner wondering what just happened. The theater might actually get screwed out of some business for bad publicity.
This is why I suggest this case should be used as a precedent to pass a law that somewhat limits their freedom of expression. Just like I can't run in the streets nude, hackers shouldn't be allowed to screw with the consumer in the way that they have. I know that limiting our freedom in anyway is unpopular, but something needs to happen otherwise, it'll just keep happening. It'll get worse and worse every time. GeoHot and the others who will follow in the future will just keep pushing the limits of their first amendment rights until a law is passed anyways. Make it a misdeanor similar to a speeding ticket. Having to pay 50-150 bucks and do community service for a few weeks for first offense and things just getting worse from there sounds like a good idea to me.
As for the piracy argument, I as a consumer don't really care to dwell on this topic as long as the game devs get more than enough to fund bigger and better projects in the future, which a lot are. Unless companies get together and force the issue until they get their respective ways, piracy will never be stopped anyways.
Sorry for the huge opinion filled book I just wrote but I'm very opinionated on this topic and needed to get this off my chest. I still had about 2000 characters left so it could have been worse.

it is hilarious how people are angry because anon made the product they own useless for a short period of time, but when Sony brings down PSN by itself or removes features of the PSN that it originally had, then they don't have a problem with it.

Not saying these hackers did the right thing but they do make a good point that I think a lot of us gamers should think about.
"Do I really OWN my console?"
The supreme court ruled on the iphone that once you buy it you can jailbreak if you want, thats because it YOURS to do whatever with. (see http://www.copyright.gov/1201/ for details)
Imagine buying a car and being told you cant repaint it, supe up the engine or put rims on it. We would think that crazy but it happens all the time with electronics.
I know people say its only for pirating games but that's not always the case. I bought a second PS3 jailbroke it and copied all the games I have PURCHASED on it for my 4 year old son to play, and now he doesnt need my copy and cant damage it because its saved on the HDD.
So I challenge all you intellectual gamers to ask your self do you really own your PS3 and then define ownership.

Anonymous = trolls

People say they agree with Anonymous yet they they are crying over the fact that they can't go online for one day even though it is going for a cause that they (as previously stated) promote with their posts.
People are funny...Do you wan't full control of your console later while occasionally not being able to play. or do you wan't to continue with Sony's choice of not giving the consumer control of their console.
I say this as a fan of the PlayStation brand.

LOL i love how hackers full pretty tough in type.
keyboard warriors we called them in Diablo.
i'd like to meet the guy who compromised by WoW account
personally, sometimes, and watch him piss himself.
hell, i got a notification that someone in New Jersey
logged into my facebook yesterday
but if they're too scared to stand face-to-face with their
victims the punishment should fit the crime, ie: chop their hands off.

So ownership generally infers that you have the right to use an item as you see fit, correct? If Sony wins this case, does it mean that PS3 owners are essentially in possession of leased items? Will they charge exorbitant monthly rates for the consoles as well??
On another note, I wouldn't be surprised to see 'Sony v. United States Consumer' with the docket reading "Over two million Playstation 3 units have been damaged in the United States over the last year, we demand reparations from the consumer."
DevilishHornet
Thank god I got my fat friend to switch to xbox lately. Otherwise he probably would have killed himself lol (He 10th prestieged 3 times legitly on MW2 before Black Ops released if that tells you anything)
Griever2112
I got an easy solution for this... I'm getting rid of my PS3, I've played the God of War series... I may loose out on Sly 4 but for the crap Sony is pulling the the obvious retribution that is coming from the hacker community... it's not worth dealing with it.... I support the ideals of you bought it, you can do what you want to it, GeoHot didn't hack the DoD or FBI or the Treasury with his PS3, he showed us what SOMEONE ELSE discovered. And Sony went on a witch hunt because GeoHot is known while the fail0verflow is not, so GeoHot was the easy target, and now because Sony went super anal on this to make an example of GeoHot, Anon, is now in the fight... and I want no part of this anymore... I'll buy a seperate Blu-Ray Player ans stick to my xbox and wii... I don't need to worry about Sony lowering the Iron Curtain of with us or against us and me getting screwed for stuff I have no part of.

What a dumbass have fun in Jail! Btw the only thing he deserves is to be ass raped and jail bait
Tactless_Ninja
Didn't that last agreement that they rewrote for April 1 basically force you to accept their terms or have your console and all virtual items rendered null and void? I agree I don't want hackers getting into my stuff but Sony is pulling some extreme s@$% too.
Blue_Vortex
Thumbs me down because I agree with what Anon stands for. I believe in freedom of speech and if PSN needs to be sacrificed for it, so be it.
Goddhand
It doesn't matter whether or not you agree with anonymous or not because you can't stop them.
