UPDATE 4.21.2011 11:06 AM: PSN Down Again, Sony references possible attacks.  Also: Since the PlayStation network is down, here's a list of what you can still do with your PlayStation 3.

The PlayStation Network is down for unplanned maintenance while various Sony websites, like the PlayStation Blog, have been down for most of the day. Several hours before the PSN and Sony websites reported loading issues the hacker collective Anonymous issued a statement to Sony in regards to their actions against hackers, specifically GeoHot. Anon has not taken credit for an attack and Sony has yet to confirm there has been an attack at all.

Many are wondering if these outages are related to the statement from Anonymous. An official PlayStation twitter account acknowledged there were problems with the PSN, "PSN currently undergoing sporadic maintenance. Access to the PSN may be interrupted throughout the day. We apologize for any inconvenience." Reports of problems connecting to the PSN began after the statement was posted and as of now it seems to be functioning again.

Anonymous called out Sony specifically for their treatment of the hacker GeoHot who Sony has been involved with in a civil case. They site issues with Sony's access to personal information from those who viewed the video of the hack or who visited GeoHot's website.

Do you think Anon is attacking Sony or is this all a coincidence?

Sony sue the pants off these people. Hackers need to kill yourselfs because they are doing things to hurt gamers not help them. Anyone taking the hackers side should be spit. Hackers causing problems when 2 major games where released an not only that a holiday weekend. Hackers just ruin things for the general public so gg you rejects.

I don't know if this is a prob with sony's system or an attack on the system (more likely) but it's kinda rediculous. I think if this is an attack then it can also be considered a problem with the system because this should not be able to happen. Also I wonder if Sony will offer any sort of free games or anything to make up for the system being down. It would be the best way to get the gamers on their side if they say we were attacked but we fixed it and btw heres some cool stuff! Then their enemies become everyone's enemies.

I think someone was def. behind this. I got hate mail mid-game the day it went down... saying "SCREW U CAMPER" (when i was clearly not camping so i found it odd) then 3 more messages in a row saying "HACKED TONIGHT" and "HAHAHA HACKED BIA" etc. I thought it was just children screwing around, because why threaten to do something if youre powerful enough to hack ME through a PS game, and then say youre going to wait all day to do it?

But then the entire network goes down? then we got an error code for a day, then now it says "down for maintenance"?

I definitly think someone is behind this and that it was an attack

I think SOMEONE is behind it. For the first time ever I got random "hate" mail on the PS3 while I was playing blackops (in the middle of a game) ... someone saying "EFF YOU CAMPER" (when I wasn't at all camping. Not even close -- which i thought was odd in and of itself) and "YOURE GETTING HACKED BIATCH" "HACKD TONIGHT HAHA" and they went crazy claiming that they're going to hack me tonight, and the joke is on me hahahaha and "I got you" "You'll see tonight" which made me think they were just children screwing around, because, if you're going to do something, why would you wait several hours to do it...

Then, it happened to the entire PSN. So... I think someone was definitely behind this.

Sony is doing this on purpose to get people annoyed at anonymous. Sony is doing this because of the first successful attempt from anonymous to hack into the playstation network. Since the first attempt, anonymous has not issued attacks on the network.

i personally think anon is pissed cause they will never get laid c
so they're taking their anger out on sony

PSN if your smart enough have you ever thought about tracking the source of the location of where they are if u do that you could accomplish more or even better yet why don't find someone you guys know who is really good at hacking other hackers

do something upload viruses on they're computer
    track the source
or even get the FBI on their asses that should scare anon or check the basements i bet they're hiding in them lol damn anon nerds

Azarel7 said it all!!! mod your system all you want as long as it doesn't affect others. People forget that when they get online they agree to the terms (rules, laws) to play online, and if they don't follow the terms(rules, laws) they can be in trouble and sued. Their will all ways be bad apples in the bunch.

Why would a site "Claiming" they didn't do it before Sony and PSN even reported having trouble

Ya know...its one thing to jail break your PS3 and install whatever, that's fine, but then to go online and hack other people, or turn on invulnerability, take away other people's accomplishments or reset them to level 1, (I'm specifically talking about MW2 here) is ridiculous. That is crossing the line.

Where would it have ended? MW2 got hacked, Black Ops was beginning to get hacked...I had to quit MW 2 so many times because some people simply do not care that cheating ruins the fun. Some friends of mine literally got reset to level 1 after putting in hours to prestige...I wonder which games would have been next..SF?

Listen, if you want to install a PSone emulator. Fine.If you want to reinstall Linux, no problem, but if you want to cheat and hack other gamers, that is where the problem begins. Keep your hacks and your tricks to yourselves and everyone will be better off....

How great that this happened on the European release date of Mortal Kombat. I wasn't planning on playing it online for at least a week or so, but many did want to play online and it sucks for them and anyone else that wants to play on PSN now. For me, personally it's not all that bad, I'll just play me some Fallout 3 or Transformers :)

and sony. you are apparently in a losing battle. your servers have been down for some time now. unless you want everyone to fall into the hands of microsoft i would recommend taking anonymous a little more seriously

Anonymous is causing harm to innocent people who just want to play their games. isnt that what everyone is all about is playing video games and having fun? Anonymous, if you're really going to harm sony do something that just affects them. Not us. We as a playstation community havent done anything to you. If anything be the mature ones about this situation and let this thing go. Sony knows now that you have them by the balls. LET US PLAY!!!!

So 'Anonymous' is attacking the innocent to get back at the 'tyrant'. If this is the case, then i guess the millions of people are just collateral damage. If this was a war, i'm pretty sure that would be some sort of heinous war crime.

I'm not sure what the *bleep* is going on. my PS3 access the store crap fine, my computer can't access the stuff.. *shrugs*... at any rate, sony finally pissed the hackers off. All in all Sony did ask for this to happen. They have been way to freeking Over zelous in anti hackers and have harmed alot of systems with legit up-dates. that Bricked LEGIT systems (all they did was have a replaced HDD, which is perfectly legal and even outlined in the manual) and made that patch mandatory, then they go and release a fix-patch of the EXACT same name/number, and it's not mandatory, though it'd save the PS3.

Then they go and sue someone for Unlocking the PS3, not like you didn't buy the system, or buy the disks for it. Come on, Sony has gone way to far to counter hacking. aka they've ruined game experience for players/users of the system that Never even play the games that were being hacked, and would never be effected by it.

Sure Hackers are doing this, though someone has to send a clear message to sony that pissing people off is a bad thing to do. They didn't stop someone who was damaging the systems, ruining gameplay of countless, they attacked and sued someone who unlocked the system. Look at the PSP, that was unlocked and really, never effected the sales of the Legit PSP's and never ruined the sales of PSP games.

I know if sony would get their heads out of their butts, and give the people the features they want, this crap would stop.
    -OtherOS
-PS1 Image copy to PS3 Hard drive. (like OMG, they could force it ot be real PS1 discs, and everyone would be ok with that.)
---It's not like they would introduce how to properly port the PS1 games into an image file, that crap already is out there and pretty much perfected. (I use it, and honestly I'm glad. I don't wanna try and keep those old discs from being scratched up from over use)
-Bring back the [software emulation] for the PS2 on the newer systems.. Like sheesh.... PS2's are starting to fail and getting hard to find reliable ones.

Simple crap like this would make the attacks stop. I know for sure that they used the CFW model from the PSP to do the PSX emulation on the PS3. Kinda cheap they introduce that feature that was invented by 'hackers' which we all love on the PS3. I personally would love to keep all the games and not have to worry about having more systems then I need. (at most 3) but really I've got 4 (5 but one's a backup) and it's annoying to see the system able to replace/save strain on older systems, yet they refused to do it.

BTW, I love the PSX games for Digital DL, but i hate the fact not all of them are avaiable and I have to REBUY THEM if I have the disc version.
