Opening Day Baseball: MLB 2K11 vs. MLB 11: The Show

Hot summer air, the roar of crowds, the scent of a searing hot dog. I truly love Opening Day for Major League Baseball. Granted, I'm spending it locked inside our hermetically sealed (and air-conditioned) G4 offices, but I'd rather be stuck out in the bleacher getting sunburned and eating food that is terrible for me while washing it down with extremely overpriced beer. So we decided to replicate all of that, except without the beer, thanks to MLB 11: The Show, and MLB 2K11.

To honor baseball's starting day, we've taken our hometown team, the Los Angeles Dodgers, and pitted them against their opening day opponent, the San Francisco Giants. They play for real in just a couple of hours, but we decided to let 2K and Sony simluate everything for us.

Today will mark the 10th time that the Giants and the Dodgers have faced off on opening day in real life since both teams moved to California, and it's a rivalry that has deep roots in the world of baseball. The Giants are the reigning World Series Champs, while the Dodgers haven't won a championship in 22 years. But that doesn't mean you can take this matchup for granted. Hit the break to see how the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox scored the games, then find out what happens tonight

Dodgers 13 - Giants 1

MLB 2K11 has the Giants besting the Dodgers, with the Dodgers taking an early lead thanks to a 4th inning that nearly doesn't stop, and eventually coming out on top of the World Champions 13 to 1. Ted Lilly pitches a valiant one-run game, while the Giants bullpen comes under non-stop attack and they never get anything going either on the mound or at the plate.

On the flipside, MLB 11: The Show has a much closer matchup with a heartbreaker of an ending. Despite a late-game rally and pulling themselves back to within three points of a tie, Andre Ethier of the Dodger hits into an easy toss-out to first base with bases loaded, killing a potential win.

Wondering how the entire season plays out? We took care of that for you as well. You know, in case you're just way too impatient to wait through an entire baseball season.

Not bad on either side, considering that most sports experts are picking Boston and Philadelphia as two of the powerhouse teams for this season. How will it actually play out? We'll have to wait and see and then remember to check this post in the fall. But for now, Go Blue!

Did either game simulate the Dodger fans beating up a couple Giants fans after the game?

Also, am I the only person that hates playing baseball games with the right stick? So annoying.

Clayton Kershaw should have been the starting pitcher in that first video.

Multiplatformers can't compete against PS3 Exclusives because Multiplatformers are made on the 360 and ported over to the PS3. I mean as much as I love my Xbox, I do know that the PS3 is physically a better piece of hardware. (it's funny too because during PS2 vs Xbox the Xbox was the better hardware yet game developers were making and gear games more towards the PS2, and now it's the complete opposite)

Anyway there are a lot of Xbox Exclusives I don't really play, mainly HALO and Gears of War, but there are some PS3 Exclusives I'd like to have like Heavy Rain (maybe Nick and Drake 2 or whatever it is for the graphical aspect of it)

I do really wish I could have MLB The Show because I just got done reading the Official Xbox Magazine review of MLB 2K11 and even they talk about the 2K Series being plagued by craptastic everything...

I simply don't get it, if you are 2K Studios and you consistently put out a game that EVERYONE knows is going to be bad, why don't you make it better?

I'm not a big EA Fan but I believe that EA having a Monopoly on NFL is NO WHERE NEAR as horrible as 2K Studios having a Monopoly on Baseball because fact of the matter is EA is always evolving Madden and making it better and don't a good job at playing a game everyone loves. 2K Studios is simply making crap they know everyone has to buy.

I think the last 2K game I bought was garbage too. Was Mafia 2 made by 2K?

Even the people marketing 2K11 (and 2K10) know the game sucks. That is why they have to offer $1million to whoever gets the first perfect game, otherwise there would be no reason to buy it.

Simply put, I had no reason to buy a PS3 (again-- yes this is my 3rd and no, not for technical problems) except for MLB The Show. RTTS mode is still the best baseball role-playing sim ever. I've been obsessed with the game since it's first release.

It would be nice if 2K11 was comparable, but it's not. I've seen the career mode and it's seriously lacking.

Baseball doesn't have points, it has runs.....

Yeah but how is 2K11? I know The Show is supremely better then MLB 2K (damn you PS Players who get to play a good baseball game!) but I also know that MLB 2K isn't just inferior to The Show, it also just sucks.

Last year was a slight improvement but I still find myself annoyed with the constant same things said by the announcers. I mean it gets to the point that I turn it off because I much rather listen to the cars driving outside my house then about how some 2nd basemen from the Milkwakee Brewers didn't get tot he MLB until he was 27 but once he got there he knew he belonged there or some garbage for the 700th time.

I am hoping the Career Feature is improved because really that's the only mode that interests me. I just don't feel right doing anything less then a 162 game season and then how can I pick and choose what to sim and then I always have a player like Rich Harden that is dominating and I'm like, 'Ahhh! I can't sim his days!' because I'm too attached to him kicking butt. I miss MVP Baseball.
