Sad times, MMO fans. Along with confirming layoffs at Sony Online Entertainment, the company has stated that it is no longer developing spy-based MMO The Agency.
Here's the statement:
"SOE is discontinuing production of The Agency so it can focus development resources on delivering two new MMOs based on its renowned PlanetSide and EverQuest properties, while also maintaining its current portfolio of online games."
The Agency was originally announced way back in 2007, and has seemingly gone through several focus changes in the ensuing four years. I saw a lengthy demo of The Agency back in 2009, and I was really impressed with it. The combination of a light-hearted look and tone, action-gameplay, espionage-setting with MMO elements seemed like a sure-winner idea to me. Instead of a new MMO, all I have left of The Agency are tantalizing possibilities and a dope-ass leather organizer SOE sent me that I still use every day. Picture below:

So much wasted E3 stage time...
Oh well....DCUO was the one I was interested the most in....and I didn't even bother buying that....so probably wouldn't have bought this one either....even if it did look promising...
Perhaps the Agency can hang out with True Fantasy Live in the MMO cancleverse...

I was actually looking forward to this game, then I saw gameplay sometime last year. Let's just say I'm not disappointed that it got cancelled.

This things been in production for four years and they just throw away all those millions by canceling it. They would have lost way less money just doing what they can and releasing an unfinished game than releasing nothing at all.

Wow, good call canceling the only MMO I and everyone I know was looking forward to. A console MMO that appeals to shooter fans instead of a lame fantasy setting? Awesome. Too bad they couldn't see the potential.
Sony has lost MAJOR points for me with this idiotic move. A ton of people are going to be really, really upset.

This game has been in production for how many years? Good call Sony scrapping a multi million dollar project that could easily have recouped some losses going FTP. Wow...

Sad news--I was really looking forward to this.
I loved that The Agency wasn't set in the usual High Fantasy or Sci-Fi setting like the vast majority of MMOs on the market.
I love me some Elves and Aliens, but it's getting a bit old--new blood is needed.

From the gameplay videos they originally showed I didnt think it was really going to take off anyway, at least they arent going to waste any more money on a failure.
