 Xbox 360

Microsoft is doing an Xbox 360 System Update Preview program for their new release and Microsoft wants you to help. Before you get too excited, there is some pretty strict criteria you need to meet: must live in the US and you must own an Xbox 360. The public preview is to help Microsoft prepare for an updated Xbox 360 disc format. As a thank you for participating in the program you'll receive a copy of Halo:Reach. Keep reading for more details

Major Nelson posted about the preview on his blog. He wanted to make sure people thinking about volunteering were aware of these points:

  • We’re looking for multiple thousands of participants, so your chances of making it in are good.
  • This opportunity is open to Xbox LIVE Members in US region only*.
  • To avoid any problems, read the survey carefully and double check all the information you provide.
  • While both Xbox LIVE Gold and Silver members can sign up, priority will be given to Gold members in the selection process.

Details about what testers will be expected to do were limited but if you're going to get a free copy of Halo: Reach you'll probably have to do something labor intensive. What type of new disc format do you think it will be?

Do you have what it takes? Sign up.

Just a heads up, it looks like they've reached their application limit. No more testers can sign up.

I just want my copy of Halo: Reach since I refuse to pay for it since I sank WAY too much money into gallons of Mountain Dew trying to win it during the "Honor the Code" promotion and didn't win a damn thing.

I'm thinking they figured out a way to manipulate the disc in such a way as to shrink or completely get rid of the partition holding some code and whatnot. Thought I read somewhere that a 360 disc has just under 7GB of game data and a partition with about a 1GB worth of video code.

Its amazing how quick everyone assumes it will be BlueRay. When MS has said they won't go with BlueRay at all with this system. Not sure what the new disc could be won't signup since I hate the Halo series.

I'm actually hoping this kills my already ailing xbox so I can force microsoft to fix it when it bricks.

It can't be blu-ray. A software update won't turn an existing 360 into a blu-ray player. Blu-ray is hardware, not just an update patch and MS sending a new disc in the mail.

I've seen this article up on multiple sites but they all fail to mention(except for Gamespot which is where I saw it first) that the testing materials Microsoft sends you have a chance to make your console non-playable and completely brick it. Just thought people would like to know that b4 going to sign up. Me I'm not to worried about it so I signed up anyway.

I'm kinda curious about this because i am wondering if they will manage to make this format compatible with existing 360's? cause if not then i think it would be a bad move.

microsoft: hey, if we just use DVD technology we can be out first!
sony: we'd rather maximize our system technologically
microsoft: ya, but we like money
sony: oh sorry, we like to make good games
nintendo: sometimes we make good games too, but we also wanted to be out first, thus the Wii!
    microsoft+sony: stfu nintendo.

I'm pretty sure the new format, is going to be someting in the HD-DVD category. The 360 reads HD-DVD's so It's probably an HD-DVD that can hold a lot more onto the disk itself then the current ones.

I recall reading an article about the HVD (Holographic Versatile Disc) format that is extremely dense in data capacity, like equal to 20 to 200 blu-ray discs (a potential 6TB on a standard size disc!), Why such a huge capacity? Aside from the obvious storage reasons, the other is to discourage piracy. Such a huge raw file size would stifle casual piracy as most people don't have free TBs of hard drive space for converting to even a compressed format, at least not in the immediate future. Here's the wikipedia link:

Why is the 'reward' a Copy of HALO: Reach?... One I've already played that game (Rental) and I'm not a Halo Fan to begin with.

I mean if you are a HALO fan and wanted Reach don't you think You'd be able to afford it by now with it being 40 Bucks New and 27 Bucks Used at GameStop? I mean I understand people don't really have so much disposable income but how long has the game been out? I still signed up because it would be cool to do and give feedback on, but I also did the Xbox Labs garbage out of want to help XBL be better. I mean I guess it's cool they gave 0g Achievements and some Avatar Items, but I'm not going to use the items. I just did it in hopes it makes XBL better.

And as to DPsx7, it is my opinion that you are a horrible person.
