BioWare

BioWare is looking into using Dead Space's envoirnment HUD, or heads-up display, as inspiration for Mass Effect 3. One of Mass Effect's programmers, Brenon Holmes, went to the BioWare forums to talk about his interest in incorporating HUD elements. Fans in the forums expressed their dislike of Mass Effect 2's HUD. Holmes surprinsgly agreed with them, "We actually had the exact same thought during ME2 development and did a few prototypes of a health and shield indicator in world on Shepard's armour. The end result was not as great as we'd hoped... "

Since Mass Effect 2's HUD didn't turn out exactly as they had hoped, BioWare began looking at alternatives. One particular HUD they liked was the one from Dead Space"Dead Space; the interface... it feels really immersive. I just want to touch the hell out of those buttons . So we are still investigating ways of putting some of our HUD elements into the environment... we'll see what we end up with."

Do you think a HUD like the one in Dead Space will enhance the gaming experience?

As a side note, Mass Effect 2's final piece of DLC "Arrival" comes out tomorrow.

Not sure. The HUD in Dead Space is designed to ratchet up the survival horror aspect of the game since the action is still occurring around you as you use it. I don't know that this would work for a more tactical game like ME. But having the option would be good, I just don't know that I'd make it a requirement.

Now that sounds like a good idea. Its good to see video game companies looking at other companies to evolve good ideas. Dead Space 3 will have to look at Mass Effect 3's HUD and try and blow that away now.

Funny thing, video games are trying to be more "realistic" by removing the HUD as much as possible, yet the real world is trying to implement it. Some cars have had HUDs for a while now and the millitary is trying to create a helmet with a HUD on its visor for the soldiers.

I for one never really thought twice about the HUD in Mass Effect, which means it did exactly what it was supposed to do, show me data when I need it and stay out of the way otherwise.

I like the idea of developers from different games helping each other, or trading ideas. Gaming shouldn't be about what company your from, how much you make, or if you're a big company or not. It should be about the love of video games.

Does that mean everything will be a holographic screen right in front of Shepard? I don't like this idea, but change the hud definently

its cool if they can pull it off, but they cant do it the same way on shepard's back like on isaac's back. because the moment you take cover behind something, he turns around and u can't see it.

That just means they're smart for reaching out to a larger audience. Game developers are businesses, first and foremost, and they're going to try to make as much money as possible.

Well, Bioware plans is to attract the FPS fans nowadays. An interview at some other gaming website mentioned, they are makings RPGs for people who doesn't even like RPGs.

Let's just hope the evil overlords (EA) don't decide to cut this project short and cash in on the willingness of the fans.

    *Story update*

Fans that did not like ME2's hud were all banned from the internet and their consoles by Bioware's admins. All employees of Bioware that agreed with the fans were immediately terminated....
