Batman: Arkham City will certainly have its fair share of classic villains to pummel and thwart, but one baddie in particular will see his role expanded to a terrifying degree: The Riddler.
There will still be Riddler Trophies aplenty scattered around the enemy infested streets of Arkham City for players to collect, but unlike Batman: Arkham Asylum, the Riddler himself will appear in the flesh this time around and pose a deadly serious physical threat to Batman by way of devious and dastardly challenges about which we still know very little.
Rocksteady Studios demoed Arkham City for us a few weeks back, but there was one portion, the very end, that we weren’t allowed to include in our GDC preview, and it was a brief trailer reintroducing us to the new and improved Riddler. The trailer was cut together like a Saw promo, and not surprisingly, the trailer showed a Riddler very much akin to Jigsaw from the aforementioned horror franchise, monitoring television screens depicting various scenes of people in painful and, presumably, lethal traps, from which it's assumed that Batman will have to rescue them.
While we were told that these Riddler challenges will be optional and will not tie in directly to the overall Arkham City story, they won’t be simply tacked on “side missions.” The Rocksteady rep said the team has put a ton of work into the Riddler’s missions, and given the level of intensity and terror depicted in just the brief flashcut snippets we saw, it definitely shows.
We will hopefully have more enigmatic details shortly, so stay tuned. For now, I ask you, will this do?
