Angry BIrds Halloween Tops 1 Million Downloads In Under A Week

According to one of the fathers of ubiquitious, insanely profitable mobile game Angry Birds, console gaming is dying.

Speaking at the South By Southwest Interactive conference, Peter Vesterbacka, who leads business development at Rovio Games, said innovation has moved into the mobile gaming space, because mobile game companies are more "nimble." Vesterbacka wasn't fond of the price tag of traditional console games either, pointing out that $40 to $50 is a lot of money for a game that is hard to update.

It's almost as if Vesterbacka's analysis is a direct response to Saturo Iwata's words at the 2011 Game Developers Conference. Iwata made the point that mobile game distributors have no vested interest in creating quality products, and that the industry is fracturing so much that developers may soon have a problem making enough to get by and keep making games.

To paraphrase Iwata's views, Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony all live or die by how good the games are on its system, where a distributor like Apple, say, really doesn't care, as long as there are a lot of little games available for their phones.

What do you think? Who's right here? Are mobile games more innovative than console games?

Console games are going to stay because they'll move you more than some crappy time killing lighter on your phone to for some reason entertain you.

Yeah, cause it's not like the record for "best selling game" hasn't been broken numerous times over the past few years or anything like that.

Coming from the perspective of PC gamer, I don't see console gaming dying, as mediocre as it is. For something to just pick up and play for a few hours they have the biggest market. So in a financial sense, console gaming has the biggest market and is therefore the best kind of gaming. Throw in features like rentals and split screen and you've got a good social gaming platform.

..Now if only they would update their hardware. DirectX 9 is stagnating the market when it comes to graphics. If it wasn't for that, EVERY game would look like Crysis.

ooh yeah console games are REALLY dying! call of duty black ops is the top selling game, CONSOLE, and people are shaking for plenty of new games this year, Mass Effect 3, Elder Scrolls V, Gears of War 3, Zelda Skyward Sword, etc.

this guy is a troll. he's exactly like michael pachter, spewing bullcrap for attention.

hey buddy? go back to developing BAD AND HIGHLY OVERRATED iPHONE GAMES. when miyamoto, cliffy b, kojima, and tim schaefer say its dying, then maybe i'll give a damn.

internet troll makes bad games on iPhone, i said it.

Mobile games will never be as popular as console games mainly because we all want to play our games on a big beautiful high def television and you want you games to reflect your hardware. Games on your cellphone are just time wasters to do on the bus or train etc... Doesn't matter if its angry birds or mindsweeper etc... they are just simple time waster games. The only way mobile gaming is going to beat console gaming is if the games on mobiles become as large and expansive as consoles and allow you to dock your mobile into your TV at home and play there. Also mobile gaming is limited by just using touchscreen you need a full controller to play alot of games out there.

This guy is just riding on a 15-min of fame cloud where his 1 product is getting ported to ever venue (even board game). TBH i get bored of Angry Birds within 10 min of playing, There's only so much I can chuck birds at pigs before it gets stale. I prefer playing "Run" anyways.

this guy is a moron I would rather play a consol game than a crappy mobile phone game any day the only reason its so popular is because its only a game you play when you have nothing better to do plus most of the people who play it arent that into video games so whatever your name is that believes consol games are dying cause at this point I dont care who you are play a good consol game then come tell me what you thing so I might consider taking you seriously might!!!!!!!!!!

Please counsel gaming dying, I don't think so. just look at all these events promoting the new games which are breaking records. You can never get truly involved into a game on your phone as you can on your counsel (playing DA2 now and making some of these decisions are hard). I have never felt bad or wanting to know the backstory about those birds or pigs. I call those games time fillers. I am sorry, I am not sure how even a occasional gamer (probably me) can pick Angry Birds over a game like Dragon Age 2 or Uncharted 3 that will be coming out. AB or other phone games has it's place, but it's not ever going to take the place of the counsel.

True gamers will still shill out 60 bucks for a good game. I just think they will do more research on a game. I rely on sites like this to see what people's opinions are before investing that amount. Having a kid now, I do not have the extra income to be buying tons of games a month, plus the wife might say it's her or the games. I really really do not want to make that decision ;)

Look at it from a broader perspective than console and game sales. Yes, Call of Duty: Black Op's was a huge success along with the sales of the Wii. However, what this industry drastically lacks is innovation. It plays a big role in the gaming industry. When that begins to slow or outright cease then the industry lies stagnant and dormant. We, as gamers, don't want that. The last innovative product that came out in the past 5 years was the Kinect - hardware. Now where is the innovation within the games? What stands out among the rest that urges the consumer to rush out and purchase a game? Exactly. Everyone is playing it safe right now due mostly to a crappy economy. Thus, the rise of shooters as of late. Its a safe and easy way to make money. Unfortunately, it effects console and game sales in the long run.

This is where mobile devices comes into play. Its cheap, efficient, and a ton of fun to play without the financial burdens. Plus, their innovative. Who would of thought slinging birds into the air to kill some pigs was something new - a fresh breath of air- if you will?

Simply put: the gaming industry needs to change their methods of how they do business or risk continued unsavory profit margins. If your not willing to give us something new and fresh then we'll find someone, or something, that will!
