The horrific earthquakes that have been plaguing Japan for the past week have lead to rolling black outs and a call to conserve energy. Major video game companies like Square Enix are helping in whatever ways they can, including shutting down servers for their games to conserve energy. Affected servers include Final Fantasy XIV, Final Fantasy XI, and PlayOnline. Konami has also shut down servers for Metal Gear Online. The earthquake has also lead to the delay of several games and DLC packs. Keep reading for more details.
The tragic events that have occurred in the eastern parts of Japan since March 11 have affected the entire nation. Several major video game companies have delayed games due to the earthquakes. Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has delayed the release of Motostorm Apocalypse . The racing game was set for March 17 in Japan but is now "TBA." As of now, the April 12 release date for America has not been affected. The game was also delayed for New Zealand after their earthquakes.
Capcom will not release their Marvel vs. Capcom 3 DLC pack adding Shuma-Gorath and Jill Valentine as planned in Japan. The DLC pack was intended for this week; a new release date has yet to be announced. The announcement was not clear about whether or not this applied to western territories.
Sega's Yakuza: Of the End, the game where Kazuma Kiryu takes on zombies was set for a March 17 release date but has also been set as "TBA." The game takes place in a fictional city called Kamurocho but was inspired by Kabukicho a district in Shinjuku.
Square Enix's servers will be shut down at least for one week. Due to necessary inconvenience gamers won't be charged for PlayOnline for April. The following features will also be unavailable:
- Friend List Plus
- FINAL FANTASY XI Linkshell Community Beta Version
- PlayOnline Friend List Application
- Community Site Link Registration: Owner Men
- *Additionally, the following types of support will also be temporarily unavailable:
- PlayOnline Password Recovery
- PlayOnline Account Cancellation
- All activities requiring the confirmation of personal information
Obviously, video games are the last thing on the minds of those affected by the earthquakes. If you want to help text REDCROSS to 90999 or go here to find out more.

I apologize if my earlier comment seemed offensive, that wasn't my intention. I am very concerned for those poor people in Japan, and my heart goes out to those who have lost family and friends in the wake of this tragedy. My question was not meant to sound as though I was disregarding the true tragedy that befell Japan. Again, I am sorry, and I will continue following the new coming out of Japan.

This is truelly a horrible tragity to happen to Japan and its people. My heart goes out to them and I pray that this reactor can be contained before more is lost.Theres somethings that are far more important than delayed game development and thats the lives that are at stake and the lives that are lost.We can only pray that no more lives will be lost.

Makes pretty good sense when you think about it.

I was fortunate enough to get to spend about 9 days in Toyama, Japan a few years back. The people I met were so kind and made me feel so welcome that the moment I heard of the quake my heart went out to them and continues to do so. Time for games to take a break and let gamers show some love to the wonderful Japanese people! :)

All I hope is that japan recovers my prayers go out to families and everyone affected

what is more important a game or saving lives, we should have the same boat
Bonedegon
The people there are suffering so much. They got to worry about those people that lost everything. Games can wait in a time like this.

apparantly Dynasty Warriors 7 is delayed again in Europe,
Bigburito
all of those things being shut down make sense...except for the MVC3 DLC. I mean it's onm the disc already right? honestly it makes no sense to delay something that is only going to be less than 5 MB...

Words can't express the heaviness of this situation. A lot of their lives are changed forever. A whole city destroyed. I really hope everyone there can find a new path or continue their current path of their lives. My prayers go out to everyone over there. Good luck Japan.

"Who cares. None of those are first person shooters."
Right?

awful situation still developing over there

With all the games they've announced I doubt if American game players will be all too hurt behind their delays and set backs. The safety of those who are in Japan are a lot more important.
jungan
I feel bad for Japan.
JRX75
This is really bad for the gaming community

Kinda sucks but is understandable, send the power where it's needed. I don't play those games anyway. Well Motorstorm was a possibility, however I would find it awkward to release that now of all times.

I wanted to save this for FeedBack, but... The devastation in Japan was tragic to say the least, and my thoughts go out to them. With that said, I m not sure if my question can be answered at this time; but I was wondering if this would have an adverse affect on gaming, and/or hardware coming from Japan in the near future? I supose my question's already been answered.

Totally understandable, the stuff that they are dealing with is insane. Could you imagine this happening where you live? Speechless
