Surprise! Just a year after releasing the iPad, Apple has revealed the iPad 2 during their keynote in San Francisco. The slimmer, sexier, shinier device is "33 percent thinner"(8.8 mm compared to the original 13.4 mm) and boasts dual cameras. Along with the facelift, the iPad 2 also packs a dual core CPU.
The new A5 chip allows the iPad 2 to clock up to "9x faster graphics," while still maintaining an impressive 10 hour battery life. The tablet will also support HDMI video output, albiet you will have to purchase a $39 attachment to enjoy that luxury. If that's not enough to whet your gadget appetite, the iPad 2 has a starting price of $499 and will ship March 11 to both AT&T and Verizon customers. Click "Read More" for the full breakdown.
What's in that shiny new iPad 2? Glad you asked, here's what you can expect come March 11:
- New 1GHz dual-core Apple A5 proccesor (same power consumption as the A4)
- Front VGA camera
- Back camera, capable of shooting 720p resolution
- 3-axis gyroscope
- 8.8 mm thick (original iPad measured at 13.3 mm)
- 10 hour battery life
- HDMI video output at 1080p (Apple Digital AV Adapter required, $39)
- 1024 x 768 resolution (unchanged from the original iPad)
- Wi-fi model pricing: $499/16GB, $599/32GB, and $699/64GB.
- 3G enabled pricing: $629/16GB, $729/32GB, and $829/64GB
- Still no support for Flash
What do you think so far? Is this enough to fight off the avalanche of Android tablets?

yawn, Xoom is still better
BigDogW
This does not seem like much of an upgrade (at least from the article). The Xoom is 100 bucks more ad seems to have more features and better functions like tabs in internet, supporting Flash, and a front facing camera

I'm still a little torn between the Xoom and the iPad 2. Have to say after watching the press conference today after all the build up, I feel a little let down, got a few things I wanted but not nearly enough to have me rushing out to the stores. I really wanted and SD and/or USB, some kind of other connect-ability beside the 30 pin and really wanted the retina display or something close. I think the Xoom has better specs over all but the price tag is a lot more hefty and especially since you have to sign up for a 2 year Verizon contract. I'm on AT&T for my iPhone 4 (one of the lucky few who doesn't have connection problems) and with the iOS upgrade enabling our iPhones to Wi-Fi hot spots I just the Wi-Fi version of the iPad 2 saving me some bucks and another contract. So over all, even though it doesn't have everything I want I'm probably going with the iPad 2 unless the Xoom drops the contract adn the price between now and the 11th.

Android devices won't and have never stood a chance. Anyone who has used an Android device and then an iOS device will tell you iOS is faster, smoother, and more stable.

i have ipad 1 and don't miss flash at all. we watch youtube via the free app and play games too. for a casual "i don't want to go sit at the computer, i want to site here on the couch" device, it works great for us.
Tylerr
Lol better specs and still cheaper than all the rest.
I wonder how much the ipad 1's price will drop

The reason I can't support Apple, other than their over-pricing of everything, is that they release some product then a year or so later they release the new version for the same price that original came out was first priced at. Also, Apple's fanbase/consumers are so in love with them they just keep buying the products year in and year out and trust me I know people that do this.

Still no flash, still no usb port. Not getting it until they have both.

I feel like Apple constantly drops the ball with creating a tablet that really fits the needs of the consumer. Like the poster above me, the lack of flash really brings the usefulness down. Also, the lack of a PDF editor limits the iPad.
Albeit, the iPad does offer other things; however, the $500 dollar price tag makes me wary of using this as another outlet--gaming, movies, books.

No flash is a serious hinder to those that love to watch youtube videos or do nearly anything remotely interesting like free flash games. Hello we should not be paying 500 dollars for something that has no flash and is made by people that only care about what they think you want. I would not mind it to have flash, be the same thickness but 4 times as powerful. Apple seriously limits themselves in volumes of sales by doing these stupid decisions. Android carriers are so much more accepting.

XOOM came out before and out performs with flash.
Apple loves putting out, version after version because sheeple buy each one. I'm the sure sheeple will buy the "I-Pad 4 Nano Mini HD" in the distant future."
drangel_jam
Buying it. Sorry.
Why13
XOOM > I-Pad 2
Apple loves putting out, version after version because sheeple are dumb enough to buy each one. I'm sure sheeple will buy the "I-Pad 4 Nano Mini HD" in the distant future.

Sure front and rear facing cameras are nice but who seriously wants to take pictures/videos with that big device in public. You'll looks like a dummy

i feel sorry for those who bought the first Ipad. Now is obsolete. But is all good, android tablets are on the market and getting better by the days.
azozel
MEh No Stylus and no photoshop = No buy.
rufpyt
Still doesn't support Flash!!!!! Long live Elocity A7!!!!!!!!

inb4 Sally Wong trolls the crap out of everyone and makes some stupid objectionable comment.
Also; apple sucks.
infiniteloop91
Sounds good to me. The price is at least a little bit better than the current model and is cheaper than the Motorola Xoom. So depending on how well the hardware performs with more advanced games the iPad might continue it's market domaination.
