iPad 2 Announced

Surprise! Just a year after releasing the iPad, Apple has revealed the iPad 2 during their keynote in San Francisco. The slimmer, sexier, shinier device is "33 percent thinner"(8.8 mm compared to the original 13.4 mm) and boasts dual cameras. Along with the facelift,  the iPad 2 also packs a dual core CPU.

The new A5 chip allows the iPad 2 to clock up to "9x faster graphics," while still maintaining an impressive 10 hour battery life. The tablet will also support HDMI video output, albiet you will have to purchase a $39 attachment to enjoy that luxury. If that's not enough to whet your gadget appetite, the iPad 2 has a starting price of $499 and will ship March 11 to both AT&T and Verizon customers.  Click "Read More" for the full breakdown.

What's in that shiny new iPad 2? Glad you asked, here's what you can expect come March 11:

  • New 1GHz dual-core Apple A5 proccesor (same power consumption as the A4)
  • Front VGA camera
  • Back camera, capable of shooting 720p resolution
  • 3-axis gyroscope
  • 8.8 mm thick (original iPad measured at 13.3 mm)
  • 10 hour battery life
  • HDMI video output at 1080p (Apple Digital AV Adapter required, $39)
  • 1024 x 768 resolution (unchanged from the original iPad)
  • Wi-fi model pricing:  $499/16GB, $599/32GB, and $699/64GB.
  • 3G enabled pricing: $629/16GB, $729/32GB, and $829/64GB
  • Still no support for Flash

What do you think so far? Is this enough to fight off the avalanche of Android tablets?

No flash for the camera on on back...really!!! VGA recording for the front, I have to BUY an add-on for HDMI, no SD for expanded memory, no USB, no flash video.....why would i want this? yes I would rather pump out some extra money for hardware I want than conform to this crap. The new android tablets are looking great compared to this. Motorola's XOOM and Toshiba's Tablet come with all the parts missing from the iPad2.

    And

Azozel hit the nail on the head with his post:

Azozel "MEh No Stylus and no photoshop = No buy."

Would it be so bad to add some kind of stylus for note taking or photo editing?
That's my largest complaint for all tables of this nature. It would make it great for school, easier photo editing,etc...

If the Ipad had the ability to synch with an Ipod, and had a usb Keyboard i would totally buy it and use it as a netbook.

Right now though, I'm not all that interested.

Actually, except for the combo Verizon/AT&T, I am not too impressed. I've been waiting for this announcement to get an iPad. I can do without the cameras; heck except for the 3G, I can do without the upgrade at all -- I think. Never been a tablet owner before, so I don't really know.. I'm actually thinking of getting a discounted iPad 1 for now. Pay a little less this year. See if I like it as much as I think I might, then trading to a brand spanking new one next year when the iPad 3 comes out.

Why get Xoom when you can get those $40 USD China made tablets if all you care about is the Fandroid or Flush?

Seriously, the only ones who buy non-Apple products are those who only want to play games.

It's the same damn thing as the original iPad, but now it has two cameras and looks spiffier.
Good to see Steve Jobs is doing ok though. I've always been an Apple hater, but I hope he pulls through and gets back to his job so I can ridicule him again, and feel good about it.

Apple dropped the ball with this new ipad 2...I can not believe that it will be only 3G when there are products like the Xoom with not only flash support, Google's honeycomb, and a bigger screen, but the Xoom also will be able to be upgraded to work on 4G networks...also the Xoom will be 500 bucks with a 2 year contract and I'm sure that Apple will be too over confidant in their product to even match that price for their better end (but majorly lacking) $900 model.

Run apple addicts and stand in line for days upon end to get the latest version of whatever apple is trying to sell you. All hail Steve Jobs.

Technically the Ipad isn t cheaper. The starting price of $499 may be cheaper but its less memory and not 3G. If you compare the same size memory of both 32GB and 3G models, than the ipad (last generation) is $729 while the Xoom is $599.99 w/ a contract. Although the ipad doesn t require a contract, it does require and monthly data plan of at the most $25 a month for 2GB of data while the Verizon contract includes unlimited data and when they release 4G for the Xoom, you can send it back and get it upgraded to 4G for no charge.
