Sony announced this morning that the company is cutting the price of the PlayStation Portable. Beginning on February 27, the PSP will cost $129.99. That's down 40 bucks from the current price, a significant cut, I think you will agree.
"The PSP system set the standard for complete portable entertainment and continues to be the premiere destination for gamers on-the-go,” said SCEA’s Tim Bende in a statement. “Nearly six years after its initial launch, demand for the PSP remains strong. This new price point enables us to broaden the PSP platform to a larger group of consumers who are looking for best-in-class handheld entertainment.”
That's not all though: Thirteen new games will be added to the PSP's “Greatest Hits” designation ($19.99 each) and six will be added to the “favorites” collection ($9.99). Here's the full list:
New PSP “Greatest Hits” Titles ($19.99)
* Assassin’s Creed Bloodlines (Ubisoft)
* DISSIDIA FINAL FANTASY (Square Enix, Inc.)
* LittleBigPlanet (PSP)
* METAL GEAR SOLID: PEACE WALKER (Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc.)
* Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters
* Resistance: Retribution
* Toy Story 3: The Video Game (Disney Interactive)
New PSP “Favorites” Titles ($9.99)
* CRISIS CORE-FINAL FANTASY VII (Square Enix, Inc. )
* Daxter
* Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (Capcom)
* Killzone: Liberation
* SOCOM U.S. Navy SEALs: Fire Team Bravo
* Tomb Raider Anniversary (Square Enix, Inc.)
This is in advance of the PlayStation NGP, of course, so it looks like Sony is clearing the shelves in preparation of the launch of the "Next Generation Portable," expected to be released during the upcoming holiday season.

You think they will lower it more after a few more months? Even by 20 bucks more would make a huge difference for me T.T

The price point is pretty solid for the PSP. Final Fantasy: Crisis Core for 10 bones is a steal at that price! Admittedly, however, I have not touched my PSP in quite a while. A couple new games have piqued my interest, though. As for the NGP, I am on the fence. I do actually want it to do well. Quite frankly, just the mere fact that they are adding dual analogs is going to do wonders for the product. I really feel that the dual analogs missing on the PSP was a huge barrier to overcome gameplay wise. Makes you wonder why they left it out in the first place? Seemed much like a no-brainer to any Sony gaming enthusiasts..

wow, psp must be prepareing for its doom! next comes the npg

All PSP games are 20% off at Target this week in addition to this price cut.

if i buy another psp i hope its a good one even though it isn't a proper substitute for a nintendo dsi

That's a pretty decent cut IMO but it also causes me to wonder. If the PSP is priced at $129 now, what do you think the NGP (PSP2) will cost when it launches?
Mr_PS3
Hmm. A price drop? I do realize that the PSP will be replace by the PSP2 (NPG) and that there will be a price cut, but this seems like a pretty big price cut. I wonder what this could mean for the pricing point for the PSP2. Hopefully Sony will be going all-out with advertising and great games in order to get a hardcore handheld device into the media. I really want a great portable device.

The price is tempting but I think I'll save my money for that fancy 3DS I've been hearing so much about.

If this also applied to the PSP Go I might consider it.

I'm a little pissed that i got my psp for X-mas and spent 169$ then the ngp is going to come out winter of 2011 so they cut the price.. I kinda feel like i got ripped off!

I'm not in enough situations where I need a handheld gaming device to buy this (and even if I was I would just use my phone)

This is cool for those on the fence but sorry sony it's too little too late. I have had my PSP-3000 for a while and barely touch it. The 3DS will be out in a month. The NGP has already been announced. So factoring those elements i don't see it doing much.
Plus isn't the PSP dead? Sony announced they ceased sales of the dev kits last october.
They are trying to stall for the NGP but that won't be out for a year most likely, so they have a uphill battle especially with a year's worth of exclusives for the 3DS and Pokemon coming out next month.

I hope Daxter is $9.99 on the PSN store, I would love to snag it.

Still not going to waste my money on a psp
MrNelson92
I would be all over this if I didn't already have my awesome Big Boss PSP.

They should also cut the price of any remaining PSP Go models on store shelves, if only to clear out inventory.
