Microsoft will begin aiding Kinect hackers by releasing a software development kit to help programmers build Kinect compatible programs for Windows PCs. Releasing a toolkit for hackers is a far-cry from what we normally see from game companies who often sue gamers who mod consoles. The toolkit is expected to be released sometime in the coming months.

Microsoft has shipped more than 8 million Kinect motion sensing cameras. Hackers quickly figured out how to manipulate the camera to be used with custom software and in existing games. Each time one of these Kinect hacks gets posted online it seems to go viral; we've certainly posted our fair share on TheFeed.
Do you think Microsoft will charge for the Kinect toolkit? If they don't, what could their motivation be for encouraging people to create software for their device?

To The Users of Microsoft's Software Development Kit for Kinect: Microsoft is Giving You a Tool, But Has No Right to Your Work That You Create Using That Tool
Keep date-stamped notes of your work when you develop your modifications using this kit. A simple way of doing that is to create files or screenshots of your work - and save them! A more effective method is to mail yourself certified mail with a copy of your work, and do not open those letters until you are in front of the judge in court; this method gives a clear, legal time stamp to protect your work. Hopefully, the true developers of the Kinect modifications will be able to sue the corrupt, lazy and trash-producing Microsoft out of existence for the betterment of the computer-using community as a whole.

I would bet that this is some sort of test, as you can imagine. Or like one ofe you guys said, it could just be ways to steal the ideas from hackers to make their own mods and hardware for their systems.

WHY NOT ! Almost everyone that is on XBOX LIVE is modified anyways.

This is essentially a no-lose situation for Microsoft. There is almost zero money to be lost through kinect hacking while there is millions to be gained. I guess I could applaud their move but it's almost so obvious of a move that I'd be surprised if they didn't do it.

Not bad, Microsoft. Not bad.
But I see a price tag on this instrument. Otherwise, they may LATER ban people for not paying THEM to use the "hacking tool". It seems too good to be true, especially since no one knows very much more about this.

Free advertising... Probably one of the smartest moves I've seen a major corporation perform. That is, of course, only if Microsoft doesn't charge for the software.

sounds like they are fishing for ideas, trying to steal an idea from the creative community. it does sound kind of fishy though, Microsoft normally doesn't act like this...

Giving authority to hack the Kenict is a bold move but there is money there to make or find agenius in the rubble at the same time. as for PS3 and 360 it is a different story. Hacking a PS3 and 360 console is different than hacking a a piece of gadget that can be use on any games and other programs without cheating your way to victory or trying to mess some1 else account up that they invest so much money into

Or maybe, they've paid attention to recent lawsuits in courts. where the courts have found it perfectly legal to mod smartphones. because you paid for them and they are yours to do with as you please. I'm sure if they blocks hackers from doing what they want, they'd end up wasting money in court to find the same goes for gaming consoles.

I believe from a business prospective MS is developing the tool to help these guys out but in return the software designed using MS tool would be owned by MS maybe . Or even something that says they have the right to use it without paying royalty to the developer. who ever that may be!!!!!
