Nintendo's Wii MotionPlus Does Serious Business Despite Minimal Software Support

According to industry analyst Michael Pachter, Nintendo's sales were way, way down in the month of January. How far down? 31.5 percent compared to the same period of time last year. Ouch!

Before you start crying for Nintendo, the company still leads the current console market with 34.5 million Wii units sold in the U.S., compared with Microsoft's Xbox 360 selling 25.8 million, and the Sony's PlayStation 3 selling 15.7 million.

It makes sense that Nintendo's sales would be falling; after all, the company has been riding the crest of the huge Wii wave for five years or so, and eventually, the wave was going to crest and break. The challenge for Nintendo: Coming up with something to cause the next wave to form.Is it the 3DS? Another iteration of the Wii? Or will we see something else entirely from Nintendo?

I am not at all suprised the sales have dropped demand has dried up since the Nintendo fans already have them. The casual gamers really only have 2 choices XBOX 360 which supports HDTV or the WII which doesn't, PS3 doesn't seem to be casual gamer friendly. If I were into desktop consoles I would get the 360 for the HD support alone.

I recently bought a DS because I wanted a portable system and really didn't enjoy the PSP very much when I tried it. I love the DS but to me 3DS is irrelevant since I can't see the effects due to eye issues. So if I buy one it will be for a game I really want.

Nintendo really has to nail the 3DS for several reasons. One, the release of the 3DS is one of the main reasons of the sales decline because everyone is saving thier money, waiting for the 3DS. Two, if people are going to be buying Nintendo, its most likely gonna be 3DS related more than Wii related. That being said, Nintendo has to take advantage of all of the 3DS features and making games that would keep people coming back for more. Good luck Nintendo, us nintendo fans believe in you.

They believe the 3DS will save them. No doubt I will sell out.

I still see a video game crash for Nintendo with all the junk games out there and graphics that look mor dated every day.

I'd expect the 3DS to rake in the profits. I've heard nothing but good things about it, but it does need more press in the US. than I've seen it get. They haven't advertised it as heavily as they should, and it releases in just over a month. It'll definitely be the next big thing, though. An E3 announcement for the Wii's successor would be a wise idea this year.

Part of me wonders whether Nintendo (who should have been working on a new console by now) is going to get out of the console biz completely. I wonder if they even have the engineers to work on all the demands of what people would expect in a next gen console?

Although another part of me thinks they're just biding their time. It's kind of a weird moment, technology wise, for consoles. They could just be waiting to see how things shake down, like digital delivery/content, etc.

let me start off by saying i am not a fan of nintendo that stopped for me at the n64 with that said!

NO WONDER the wii has fallen !!!!! because everyone already ownes one and the failure rate on the system is uber low how do i know this.

because the wii is a rectangle game cube with motion sensors so they have been perfecting this tech since 2000 or so .so they should have it down pat not to fail.

Wii? No, I'd wager the sales loss is due to the 3DS. Who's going to buy an ol' DS (which is going to be dirt cheap on the used market once the 3DS launches) with the 3DS coming?

Sure their sales are down now, but I'm betting that, come launch time, Nintendo's gonna be topping off their Scrooge McDuck money bin with some serious 3DS loot--this is hardly surprising or troubling news re: Nintendo sales, but to be expected.

So how is it that this jackhole (Michael Pachter) maintain a position, as a respected industry analyst? The man is incorrect more often than not. Is he just kept around, as part of an industry joke?

It's hard to believe that last generation the US bought 8 Sony consoles for every one MS console, now the same ppl are approaching 2 MS consoles for every one Sony console.
