Microsoft has looked at January's NPD numbers and proclaimed the Xbox 360 the winning console. Here are the raw numbers:
- Xbox 360 sold 381,000 units in January, up 48,000 units year-over-year.
- Xbox 360 is the only console platform to show year-over-year growth in January at 15 percent.
- Total retail spend on Xbox 360 topped $551 million, making it the top selling console platform for the 10th month in a row.
- During the month of January, four of the top ten console game titles were for Xbox 360 including: “Call of Duty: Black Ops,” “Dead Space 2,”“Dance Central,” and “Kinect Sports.”
Overall, though, according to the NPD group total video game hardware sales are down 8% from last January. Negative numbers seem bad, but when you consider how long it's been since any brand-new console has appeared, it's pretty amazing that sales have remained as high as they have.

people kill me saying the same thing every year about the ps3 wait til this game comes out and then it does and the sales don't change! i have both systems and the only games i might get for my ps3 are mlb the show and killzone 3, other than those i don't see anything else i might buy, the 360 has way more games i'm interested in, and everyone that i show how the systems work like the user friendly 360 over the ps3, even though the ps3 is a better system hardware wise, it's not user friendly, especially for people my age, and obviously the red ring has'nt been happening as much as when the 360 first came out, i've never had the red ring happen to me and i've had xbox since it first came out! i'm glad a american product is doing well! it's amazing how americans hate on american products
Ghost_Deini
who cares if microsoft does'nt sell as much outside the US, the reason they don't is because outside of north america everyone hates us and our products, but americans are too stupid to see that, and fan boys always bring up well they don't sell well outside the country, i have a ps3 and a xbox 360 and i hardly every touch my ps3 unless i'm cleaning the dust off, one reason people like the 360 more even though the ps3 might be a better system the 360 is user friendly easier to navigate, everyone that i comes over to my place that does'nt have a game system i show them how both work and everybody likes the 360 a lot better! so it does'nt surprise me that the 360 has been out selling the ps3 and wii in the US!

The PS3 exclusives, admittedly good games, will not change the console sales trends -- the games are mostly sequels that appeal to current PS3 owners but unlikely to bring increased sales (if you like Killzone, why would you wait until KZ3 to buY a PS3?). Still, console competition is good for all gamers, until we all evolve to online-only services. Considering the $$ losses to disc resales, I think the game producers, publishers will continue to move in that direction.

Don't be shy kids, there's nothing top fear but the truth. Pick a publisher and check their revenues.
A small number will do better with Sony, such as Konami, the vast majority score big with MS.
lucidity
Activision was kind enough to supply a chart showing several years of revenue broken down by console.
Note how the 360 destroys the PS3...and how do they do this...with a larger user base.
lucidity
In order to completely eliminate any doubt about a companies user base, one need not ponder the hardware numbers. The undeniable truth is in the numerous financial reports of the publishing companies such as EA.
So who did EA sell more software to worldwide, the 360

Yeah and Kinect is breaking those too. M$'s entire business plan is to repeatedly sell failures. It makes the numbers look good but the kids who get the platform end up with no games or quality. 360 makes them cry. M$ is not the king of the US because it has the smallest functional userbase. The difference between territories is the US is conditioned into buying junk and replacing it every few years. Other countries tend to avoid poorly made products and that's why M$ can only trumpet US numbers while Nin and Sony steamroll them overall.

Good Job MS. You are king of the U.S. Too bad you got killed everywhere else. Now how about investing in some 1st party studios? Or at least replace the ones that left? No? More timed DLC? Guess that will do :(
@That guy that said RRoD has been cycled out..
Mine just died on me 2 months ago and took 2 weeks to fix due to the back log of broken 360s. Don't believe me? Go to your local "we fix RRoD" game store and ask. I bought mine during the first round of lies about rrod being fixed. As it turns out, every 360 that's not the new slim will die. The redesign was the fix...for now at least.

Unless you actually own stock in Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo, why does anyone care? All three consoles have enough sales to guarantee lots of high quality games. Unless it is a new IP and you want to know if it sold enough to warrant a sequel, why care so much?

I like both the Xbox and the PS3. However I like the setup of Xbox live better and I will probably always buy games available for both systems for the Xbox. You know why? Because I prefer it and as a human being I am capable of making my own choices for my own reasons. I also don't need to blast other peoples preferences because I am not so insecure as to feel the need to compensate in order to feel accepted for said choices. So chill out and go play a damned video game on whatever console you damned well please.

I wish the reverse were true. Kudos to Microsoft for having more money and business savy for marketing muscle. This is the only reason that the console has been outselling the PS3. I am a completely objective user, I had the 360 Elite first for 3 and a half years, made the switch to the PS3 when the slim version came out. Honestly, though both consoles are obviously great and deliver separate goods and the competition is healthy for every consumer. The PS3, however, has much better better *hardware.* (Key word Hardware before you nuts start attacking me) and this is irrefutable. Its better built, more efficient, uses less heat and reduces much more noise, does not have NEARLY as many malfunctions as the 360, an ass load more features, and higher technical performance specs including true 1080 rendering (all i listed are irrefutable). The 360 is more popular due to Microsoft's genius marketing schemes over the years. Everything from the aesthetics to its user interface (though not as efficient and well organized as the PS3 XMB, it's inclusion of Advertisements "avatars," and busy-ness attract western audiences).
This is what it comes down to and is irrefutable in a quantitative and technical sense: PS3 Hardware (newer models) is a much better value. Game for game, PS3 Exclusives are more abundant and more often higher rated than 360's (including PSN vs Live Arcade games). Cross Platform games are more optimized for 360 (though very negligible difference) just because of developers choice, not because of PS3 hardware limitations. Microsoft has better online services, aesthetic appeal, and controller. You can get mad at what I say, but its completely true and it is not "fan-boy-ism."
Everyone has a preference, Do you only play a few games online? get the 360. Do you like hardcore exclusives and better graphics? PS3. Do you just like to feel connected to friends and only wanna play "whats cool"? 360. Do you not like the feeling of waiting until you inevitably get the red ring? PS3. Do you think Halo and Gears of War are better than the million exclusives on PS3? 360 for you. Are you a smart consumer and more of a hardcore gamer? PS3. Are you a an Americanized corporate mind controlled consumer/moron? 360. (haha okay THAT was fan-boy-ism, suck my nutsssss)

It surprises me that a couple kinect games are the highest played games

For those who are saying "if Xbox is such a bad product why are people buying it", ask yourselves the following question:
"If Bush was such a bad president, why was he re-elected a second term?"
ImpurestCrowd
First off I love the way MS always fabricates it's numbers knowing that no one is going to verify what they say. Also i find it ironic how every house I go into seems to have a PS3 and not a 360. why does MS have to lie if they have such a fantastic product. Considering Sony doesn't post it's sales to anyone, MS can't really declare themselves the victor.
turdkills
I just wish that NPD would post the number of hardwares sold.

@pwnproof-I have no shame in calling my self a fanboy. It's simply a term use for people who are fans of something and extremely loyal to the brand. I'm a gamer at heart, been on since my first Nintendo back in 87. I've owned every system since then, including the PS1 and PS2. But since I've been playing the Xbox, I've found myself becomming a very huge fan of the brand altogether.
People who comment on G4 have turned the term fanboy into such a horrible thing. I just look at it as someone who is a fan of whatever it is they like. Now am I one of these guys who will troll PS3 post just to throw salt at fans of Playstation? Of course not. But I do stand by Xbox, and I've always been a fan of what they've done. I'm a gamer first, but of the three consoles the Xbox is the one I'm rooting for.

'Nintendo has no need to take a risk with a 'next gen' console so soon" What the WII is the most outdated of the three, how does it not need a next gen upgrade. It's less accurate than Move,(Kinect is too different too compare)it doesn't have HD 90% of the good games are 1st party titles, and are no competition for the 360/PS3 games. Kinect is even more family oriented and more appealing to a family. Their downloadable market is a fraction of the size of the marketplace or PSN. The WII definately needs some upgrades.
But other than that congrats on the 10 months XBOX. I like my PS3 better but still good job.

I think MS was smart in pushing as hard as they have for the past 10 months, because let's be honest this will be the year for the PS3 and all of their exclusives, and this is coming from a Xbox360 fanboy. Unless Xbox has some really cool titles for the Kinect coming in the next few months, PS3 will kill the competition in game sales this year.
But then again, the console wars have turned into a very entertaining spectacle so we might see a few surprises from Nintendo and Microsoft this year, neither one have really announced anything yet except for Nintendo and their 3DS, but it might be too little too late on that thing, because people's fascination with 3D has started to die down.
TheBRADLeyB
@ptatherton - Ummm.... You know what, as long as we've got the Wii in here too, let's also throw in MP3 Players... MP3/iTunes players are kicking butt! They are WAY outselling the consoles! w00t! w00t!
Secondly the Xbox 360 is maybe half way through it's Cycle and there is no way the PS3 only has '2 years left' and Nintendo has no need to take a risk with a 'next gen' console so soon.
Unless you mean we are all dieing in 2012.
