There are many opinions on the internet about the death of the Guitar Hero franchise, but one important person calls it a blatant case of abuse! Kelly Summer, former CEO of developer RedOctane, says,"They abused it. There’s no reason why Guitar Hero cannot continue. It’s a great product. My gut tells me there is still a significant market for Guitar Hero. Not every game can be a billion dollar franchise, but maybe that’s what Activision wants.“
“Look at how Take-Two has handled GTA. They haven’t thrown products out there. They’ve nurtured it for over ten years and it is still a strong franchise," Summer said.
As for the future of the Guitar Hero brand name, Summer isn't expecting a resurrection under a different company's direction. "I’d be surprised if they sold the brand as it’d prove to the world there is still a market for this product and show them up," Summer said.

I think they did over play GH and that is sad. What is alos sad is alot of those gamers started playing real musical instruments after playing either GH or RB.

it is quite simple people stop buying there games and stick with companies that looks out for your or our interest when it comes to anything especially video games since its so expensive now. Its like if i get into a fight with any of you guys for real, i know after that fight you no longer support my products nor will i support yours.

Interesting opinions all around, and there is a commonality to it all. Activision killed the franchise, not satisfied unless there were HUGE profits. They did drive it to the ground though, I couldn't keep up with all the new versions!

AHHHHHHHH They destroyed Crash Bandicoot WTF oh and this yeah never really big fan but for the fans out there, seriously they have enough money from COD to keep this game up even if it wasn't seeling good also I'm still mad at them for firing the IW CEO's and stuff even though they're still working on MW3 with 2 other studio's/developers But still Crash Bandicoot!? I grew up on that awesome franchise! PS1 and PS2

okay did he compare GTA to GH? bad move, there is a big difference between the guitar, and going around stealing cars and shooting people....

I have a feeling we'll be seeing GH again. Don't know where, or when, but I'm sure we will. Even if it isn't Activision. Same fate for Halo, really.
And I highly doubt Activision will ever kill the COD games, they're way too greedy to get rid of their top selling game. I mean, they're stupid, but not that stupid.
For now, I think Guitar Hero isn't dead, just in a coma at the moment.

Sure they did, and I don't blame them. There is only so many songs out there that people want to play, and there is only so much you can do in the music genre. I don't blame them for doing what they did at all. And for everyone saying they are killing Call of Duty by releasing it every year. They are going to release a shooter every year anyways, why not slap the Call of Duty name on it if it means selling 20 million units?

I think it's got a lot to do with the Music industry as well. Once they realized that DVD's and CD's were not the cash cow they were used to having around anymore.I believe they simply looked around for new sources of revenue. Guitar Hero to them must have seemed like a gift from above. Too bad Activision and "others" involved are like big dumb kids. They play with their " New Toy", roughly.. until finally "I used to have a little friend. A little friend to pet and play with .. but, he don't move no more".

Activision abuse a franchise? Never. Not in a million years.

To tell you the truth I would buy a Guitar Hero game after everyone else picked it up and it decreased in price. Sure DLC can get a sale once and a while but I thought it was more efficient for me to pick up the retail disc that was under 30 dollars or less. Loved GH2, GH5, GH Metallica.

it just goes to show that for all the talk from activision about having "a good buisness plan", they really don't know what they are doing AT ALL. half of a good buisness plan in this industry is listening to the fans and keeping them happy. i guarantee they never listened to the GH fans. you can't just pump out the same game every year and expect it to keep selling millions.

"Abuse" isn't the word I would use. I think "whored" is more accurate.
WildfireFox
They made so many games, they tried to give away Guitar Hero Van Halan. That should have been a message.
GatsuBlackSword
Yes! They beat that dead horse until it was ground down to dust.
gamerjes
They overdosed the market with shovel ware and were shocked when sales went down. What did they expect? Most of the recent titles could have just as easily been DLC for established sequels and the market wouldn't have felt so drowned in GH titles.
If they would have paced themselves with title releases, instead of the shovel ware approach, they could have milked the series beyond the next console generation. It is beyond redemption at this point, unless they hold out and not release a new title for 5 years or so.
Bomblord
Abuse it? no they beat it raped it and left it to the dogs and expected it to still do more for them
FuzzofPekinopolis
YES
But tell me what popular genre of game is not over-saturated right now. The cream always rises to the top. Guitar Hero was beat out by a better competitor. It is a business, just like your favorite t.v. show was canceled in the past. Whether you like it or not same goes for games.
Dollar bills give you thrills. Not enough profit, no more game.
Bobby Kotick beware, you are losing your customers/investors.

I'm fairly certain every studio...Milks a product for as much as its worth and then throws it aside... And with the exception of what rockband 3 will bring or has brought to the table with using actual instruments there isnt anything much left you can do to evolve this game type...just simply add more songs which i think people are doing more with dlc then buying software seems to make sense to me
