Diablo 3, circa 2005, wasn't quite up to Blizzard North's expectations. This version of the game was tossed and Blizzard began working on the Diablo 3 we're seeing now. The canned version of Diablo 3 was actually pretty far along in development when they decided to take the series in a new direction. How far along you might ask? Turns out the 2005-Diablo 3 had a running, playable build. Click the jump to see screenshots from the forgotten Diablo 3.
According to Kotaku, the old Diablo 3 was supposed to be a hack and slash adventure through both Heaven and Hell. The leaked screenshots show three different worlds, Keep, Angelic Lands, and Heaven. Blizzard North's vision of the game closey resembled Diablo 2's art style.

Are you glad Blizzard went back to the drawing board and are taking their time with Diablo 3? Or, based off of these screenshots, do you wish they had released Diablo 3 circa 2005?

It looks sweet in retro forgotten way. I wonder if it will ever see the light of day even though it got shut down

I wish that Blizzard would release this WITH the new Diablo 3, because that would be incredible. Looks a lot better than D2, and I'd love to see that aspect of the story played out. The health/mana UI is super cool too.
