The Xperia Play has the ability to play PS1 games, games that you will need to buy again regardless of whether or not you already own the original. You'll also have to repurchase any PS1 games that you've downloaded to your PSP. The device will launch with at least 50 games for download. Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play, the phone formally known the "PlayStation Phone" will be out next month.
According to Sony Ericsson UK managing director Nathan Vautier, you "will have to re-purchase the games, so it's not totally integrated. I think the exciting thing is that there are games which people are very, very aware of," he said in an interview with Gamespot.
For those of you who download games already: do you think it's fair you'll have to buy a game you already bought?

The hilarious thing is that people will actually re-buy games they already own just because they can now play it on a phone.

That's a deal breaker for me. I understand the difficulty of transferring disc based games, but I have quite a few PS1 downloads on my PS3 that I should be able to use. And as for the disc issue, sell an app for the PS3 that lets you import your old PS1 games from disc (it promotes the PS3 too). Lastly, what's with having another freaking store? Too many app stores equals too much risk for the buyer (some of these stores are going to die out and take your paid for content with them), and associating them with particular devices (mobile phones) that have such short lives when the vendor is already telling you to rebuy games, doesn't bode well for transferring programs from an old device to a new one. Sorry for the run-on sentence. :)
BTW, I'm a Sony fan and even have my own Sony concierge, but they are shooting themselves in the foot, especially with NGP coming out.

It's not like they're the only ones to do it...
Nintendo for example...Super Mario All Stars is one of the best examples of this...ye had the games on nes...ye had them on snes...ye had them on your GBA and you had them on Wii already but got them again anyway!
There's always been those atari compilations and so on too....it's nothing new to gaming..or any other brand of entertainment that changes formats over the years...
That "I gotta buy the white album again?" line has always been a good one on the music front....
as far as movies go...even worse as it's the norm to release several versions of the same thing...in the same format....

Why would anyone buy this thing when NGP will be out later this year? I was excited for a phone with real buttons but damn that. I should be able to play my minis or whatever I choose from my PSN account. I was on Team Sega back in the PS1 days anyway and don't really care but, is PS1 games don't transfer...

i think that's retarded. why don't they make it in-tune with the playstation store so that if i have bought the there i can download them again like how the PS Store does minis for PSP and PS#

If there is anything that gamers have taught the gaming industry is that they will shell out the ducats for ANYTHING even those things that were once or should be free. This is about the ONLY industry where when you buy something you don't REALLY own it and things that should be included (or once were), now have a price tag.
Gamers now pay for 'access' to multiplayer on X-Box live when the same service is offered for free on a compatible and equal system. Hint books are just glorified instruction manuals that were once INCLUDED in the purchase price but now cost $20 a pop. Activision will soon charge to play COD on line and despite the hoopla and howling, gamers will shell out the dough eventually (they will justify it by saying 'at least all the map packs are now included'). WOW cost $40 to buy but that price has be paid SEVERAL times over by gamers who are hooked on the system.
Game producers look at the average gamer as a sheep that has to be 'sheared' regularly of all that excess cash.

Well to me I don't own a PSP but I think it is unfair to those who do own one will have to repay. But can't blame Sony for trying to make money lol

it doesnt make sense if you should be using ur psn account on the phone, but on the other hand Nintendo's been pulling this trick forever so they probably learned it from them
crocodilius
This doesn't make alot of sense from a common sense stand point. When you buy something on the PSN it flags it so you can always download it. So...if you access your SAME account with the phone how could it possibly unflag items?
I dont use phones regardless but..this confuses the hell out of me.

Hmm I don't Care I was going to get the Sony Ericsson Experia Arc anyway.I don't know why people are blowing this out of proportion like they actually care... especially Lucidity. You're just gonna get the NGP/PSP2 anyway (and b!^<# about it)

BS... Just lost a possible sale
cardinalsfan1122
That's a let down but I don't buy too many ps1 games anyway. Still going to buy the phone if the price isn't too high because i need an upgrade still using the original Alias.
Kouper
Hey look, its the pspGOaway with more features, but the same old issues! no thanks. I'll stick to my launch PSP and pick up an NGP when those come out....

I could understand having to repurchase games on the Playstation Suite coming out for all Android devices, it seem to be separate from PSN and other company devices will use it like Samsung, LG etc. But the Xperia Play comes with Playstation Suite and Playstation Store and I should have access to my Playstation Store account and all my purchases.
I would be okay IF Playstation did a firmware update on PS3 that allowed me to transfer my purchase PS One games/minis via USB. Xperia Play is 1st gen and can be forgiven for having to take an extra step or two. But not being able to at all, and gouging fans for more is wrong.
One of Sony PR/Marketing statement at CES 2011 was connecting all your Sony products. Content you have on one device can be shared on all your Sony products.
bob_500000
It will be jailbroken anyway. Its inevitable. So the people who refuse to pay will still download the PS1 games for free anyway.
