BioShock 2

BioShock the movie is no longer being directed by Gore Verbinski. During an interview with ComingSoon.net Verbinski went into detail on why he's no longer involved with the BioShock movie. "I couldn't really get past anybody that would spend the money that it would take to do it and keep an R rating," he explained. Keep reading for more.

One of the major issues Verbinski had with making the BioShock movie was deciding on how graphic and mature to make it. "Alternately, I wasn't really interested in pursuing a PG-13 version. Because the R rating is inherent. Little Sisters and injections and the whole thing. I just wanted to really, really make it a movie where, four days later, you're still shivering and going, "Jesus Christ!"... It's a movie that has to be really, really scary, but you also have to create a whole underwater world, so the pricetag is high. We just didn't have any takers on an R-rated movie with that price-tag." BioShock had a M for Mature rating so a movie rating of R makes sense.

Verbinski even thought a BioShock adaptation would be the perfect candiate for 3D. "[Bioshock] would be a great movie to do in 3D. I'd like to go into that world wearing a pair of glasses. I think in general, gaming is perfect for 3D. Anything where you're the protagonist. The kid in 'The Shining' on the big wheel, going around corridors. That's what 3D is perfect for. To make people feel on-edge." I'm not a huge fan of 3D myself but when he puts it that way I kind of agree.

Are you bummed Gore Verbinksi won't be on working BioShock after all?

Finally there was the opening to make a good video game movie and the studio's had to shoot it down over something as stupid as an R rating and financing. Even if the movie wasn't good a legion of people would go see it due to fanbase alone that they make their money back. Come on Hollywood give us this one!

I respect him for not compromising, and I thank him for that. If people dont start taking VgG licenses seriously, we will always have movies like DoA, Far Cry (anything Uwe Boll), and many others.

Unlike most people, I actually thought Max Payne was decent, sure th lot was faithful, but the vibe was nice. Although I don't MG makes a great Max.

He never mentioned the price. Is it over $100M?

It sure would have been a great thriller. I'm sure like the rest of you I can picture what it would have looked like in my mind. That would have been awesomw looking real.

This is old news verbinski hasn't been directing for months. He had dropped back to a producer roll and they brought on the director from 28 weeks later.

Even though it had potential I'm glad that the movie is stopping for now. Please make a rated R version. The pervious director is right after all.

If they continue to make the movie then we just gotta pray it doesn't suck like the other video game movies out there. BloodRayne I'm looking at you.

@layneshipman here here. I think a good game movie is on the horizon, but it would have to be a prequel story or something like that. I don't want anyone to do any resident evil/doom type "movie to game conversoins" where they change the storyline and put their own spin on it. A bioshock movie would only work if it was a completely new story (ie: the fall of rapture) and if Ken Levine wrote the thing. There is alot of story to work there, just from the audio logs in the 1st game alone. I'd love to see an origin story. How Ryan got the idea for Rapture, recruiting his elite, building the thing, and eventually the progressions they start making in science and how their morality falls apart. The halfway point would be right around the time people start splicing up, Ryan has his kid, Fontaine goes through his motions, the new years eve party, steinman, atlas, everything going to hell in a handbasket. The epilogue would be Jack on an airplane smoking a cigarette and looking at a picture of his family. There's a package and a note from his parents saying "Would You Kindly Not Open Until...."
"They told me son, you're special. You were born to do great things. You know what? They were right."
Fade to Bioshock logo. Screaming passengers.
    Roll credits.

i agree zack snyder could definitely make this movie happen. if watchmen got that high of a budget then i think this could as well. but i must say as much as id like to see this movie (which is pretty much more than anything in the world i could want for a movie) im glad it didnt get pursued. PG-13 would ruin this movie before it even got made. it has to be really dark yet have a certain beauty to it at the same time. not to mention how much violence would have to be involved. Hollywood has just been raping every franchise they can get their grimy hands on the past few years and i would not want to see that happen to such an amazing franchise such as bioshock.hopefully one day soon they'll come to their senses and realize what a cash cow this could be if done correctly.

It's actually a relief. Who wants one of the best games of this generation butchered on the silver screen?

At least he respects the core material enough to know what is and isnt realistic.

Do we REALLY want a Bioshock movie?

No matter what the film is gonna suck. And I like Bioshock just where it is -- 3 games so far, and nothing else. I don't want it to be over marketed. Keep this game just a game. no films please.
