Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure, the next game in the Spyro series, has been announced by Activision and developer Toys for Bob. The story for the game is being written by writers from the original Toy Story movie, Alek Sokolow and Joel Cohen. "It's got a whole universe of characters and an incredible backstory and a number of different ways to interact with it." There will be over 30 toys people can buy in real life to be transferred into the game via a "portal." An action-figure starter pack is expected to retail for $70. The game promises to be a "breakthrough for the toy and video game industry." Players will be able to transfer their "real-world toys" through the game's "Portal of Power." Obviously Activision is excited about the cross-promotion between games and toys "opening up new possibilities and revenue streams for both industries." Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure is expected to launch this fall for the consoles, handhelds and PC.
From the sounds of it, this Spyro game is targeting an even younger audience than its PlayStation predecessors. The press release gave very few details about the game and instead focused on how much I'm going to enjoy buying accessories to play the game with. Do you think this will be the dawn of a new way to play games with "inter-action figures" or another attempt to make money at the expense of an established franchise?

I've been a fan of the Spyro series since the original PS1 release...
I've played just about all of the original games on PS1, and Thoroughly Enjoyed them Again (with even more Enhanced graphics to boot), on my PC...(Remember BLEEM!)? ;)
I've also played the Legend of Spyro trilogy (ANB, TEN, DotD) on PS2, and while it was widely criticized, I found it rather enjoyable (it could have been better in places), and you have to admit the 2-Person Co-Op play with Spyro & Cynder in DotD was Awesome, not to mention the great Voice Talent that Elijah Wood, Gary Oldman, Christina Ricci, etc. gave to it... :)

However, the preliminary images of SSA leaves me absolutely Skeeved out... :p 'Chibi' Spyro looks just AWFUL... like a Red-Eyed DEMON... IMHO, This is a DEVOLUTION, rather than an EVOLUTION, of the Spyro genre... and, I'm afraid, that Especially In TODAY'S Economy, a $70+ Starter Game (with additional Extra Toys at $10 a pop), aimed at the younger generation (who probably has never even played the Original series), is going to end up driving the Final Nail in the Spyro the Dragon Franchise Coffin...) :,(

Yeah, this isn't going to work, for one big obvious reason: a product targeted toward a young audience ultimately means it is the parents who decide whether or not to buy it for their kids. So immediately their going to ask themselves "Ok, so do I buy this $70 game/action figure kit, plus the cost of additional toys for it the future... or do I buy this $60 game instead?" Activision is making a horrible decision by increasing the price of this game instead of -decreasing- it. If they sold it at a lower price at launch (say $50 or $55), then most parents might see it as a bargain and actually buy it. Afterwards, Activision could make up for that loss by merchandising the toys. It's a steep gamble though, but it is the only way I think they would be able to sell this type of product.

WTF! devilvision. that is no way spyro that's puff the magic dragon. i played all the earlier spyros the ones that were great 1-3. now devilvision wants to come out and make their own spyro, get outta here with that. insomniac is the only good dev that makes spyro games. i hope this fail miserably.

I'm sorry to anyone that disagrees, but Spyro looks absolutely terrible. Can't they've already rebooted the series twice now! Can't they just stick to one set of ideas and go from there? The original was great and the Legend trilogy was okay but this is destined to suck!

As much as I want this to be awesome, I have my doubts. I'm from the generation where Spyro, Ripto's Rage, and Year of the Dragon were games I grew up playing, and I would really like to see another one that follows in those footsteps - since they were so awesome. All of the other Spyro games from this [and last] generation were disappointing at best. What ever happened to Insomniac developing Spyro? I loved Spyro and hate to see him being used as a puppet.

I think I played one spyro game that wasn't made by insomniac, I don't plan on making that mistake again. I'll read the reviews when it comes out, but I don't have high expectations.

i have played all the games but this is an abomintation o spyro. the graphics are lame spyro dosnt look like himself, and sparks is gone. PLEASE IF YOU LIKE YOUR FANS AND WANT TO GET PEOPLE TO ACTUALLY BUY YOUR GAME CHANGE THIS NOW! Do it for the fans.

ok activision i p;ayed the origanal spyro game for the ps1 it was THE first game i ever played. i am a huge fan. ive played and beaten all the games. i want a new spyro game, but this is an abomination toward spyro. pls activision if you care about your games or the games fans I would SERIOUSLY change this up a lot and make it more like the last game that was released. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE RETHINK THIS. DO IT FOR THE MANY FANS OUT THERE. Please ):
