The developers of True Crime: Hong Kong, United Front Games, have issued a statement regarding the game's cancellation. Here's the full, brief, statement from United Front's website.
"We are sorry we did not get a chance to complete this project with Activision, but we understand why. We are both committed to doing quality games and nothing less. Maybe we will have a chance to work together in the future, but in the meantime we are setting our creative sights on a different horizon"
I'm personally very bummed that it looks like this game won't see the light of day. Judging from the details we had on the game, it sounds pretty amazing... I guess we'll never really know what went wrong with the development of this title -- was the decision to cancel it a creative decision or simply a business choice -- but check out the video below. In it, True Crime: Hong Kong developer Jeff O'Donnell discusses the project, and his passion is obvious. It must be absolutely heartbreaking to have a game canceled, don't you think?

@Stephen Johnson when we are talking about Activision do you REALLY feel the need to ask whether or not it was about business. Of course it was about business. I use to have the original True Crime Streets of LA. I am going to say that it was a bit mediocre at best. I did not pick up the second one for that reason. I only just recently heard about this game, the things I heard were pretty good though. Hopefully some other big company like EA picks the rights up. A game like this belongs to be alive but the people at Activision make horrible decisions.

My guess is that they where never able to get there melee mechanic together. It loots pretty bad in the video and melee based games have been the bane of devs for a long time. Its a great idea but for some reason it has very rarely been pulled off.
Also, having it set in Hong Kong may have been a mistake. Their is a pretty strong asian backlash in the gaming world and even thought devs are western most people will look at the Title, see "Hong Kong" and write it off as crappy Hong Kong movie style game. The devs obviously love the genre but a lot of people don't.

The game got cancelled because it's not "True Crime: Streets of Call of Duty". All Activision cares about any more is making money, bleeding what used to be a good series dry with countless sequels, and $15 dollar map packs that give you 3 maps, and maybe you'd get lucky to have at least one of those 3 be a new map. Sad to see the game go, but who knows, maybe someone who cares about producing something that isn't a first-person shooter come along and give the game it's fair chance.

I really think that they are a good studio. After all, they did mod nation racers. Sony and MSFT should be on the lookout.

It almost sounds as if the developers agreed with the decision to cancel it. That line about being committed to only quality games sort of implies that they knew this wasn't going to end up being one of them. As does their saying that they understand why it was cancelled. It's still disappointing though, as I was also looking forward to this title. :(

This game looked pretty good to bad we'll never get to play it.

If it was as bad as the "True Crime" that's on TV , then I can understand why it was cancelled.
