According to Wedbush Securities video game industry analyst Michael Pachter, you will be paying to play Call of Duty games in the future.
Yesterday, along with the dismantling on the Guitar Hero franchise, Activision announced the establishment of Project Beachhead, a studio focused on "on the delivery, digitally, of new, innovative Call of Duty content and services" that will "enable tens of millions of players around the world to continue to enjoy the experience that Call of Duty offers." While Activision didn't go into practical detail about what that will mean for gamers, Pachter says it all adds up to pay-for-play CoD.
"Project Beachhead absolutely is charging for multiplayer," Pachter said. "I'm certain to my core."
"Activision said they are working on 'value added, premium content that is exclusive,'" Pachter said. "How do you exclude people unless you do it on the basis of whether they pay or not? What are you going to have a bouncer in front of the club where you play the content? The only way it's exclusive is if it excludes non-paying members," Pachter added.
When asked how a pay-for-it Call of Duty game would work, Pachter offered this:
"The exclusive content could be pay as you go, or monthly. Let's say Project Beachhead comes up with 'Call of Duty Universe,' and it launches with Modern Warfare 3 and they say 'if you join here's all the exclusive content and exclusive weapons and we'll charge you a dollar a piece.' Or If they say, 'for $5 a month you get unlimited weapons and all the map packs we bring out for Modern Warfare in perpetuity,' a lot of people will say, 'I'm going to buy three map packs for 15 dollars anyway, so for $60 a year, I'm getting all the unlimited weapons and achievements,' so they could do that. I don't know if that's what they're going to choose to do. I'd say $5 a month is reasonable, though."
Pachter is watching for people to switch consoles if one "side" starts charging and the other remains free. "What will be interesting is to see if it spurs PS3 sales when people switch over," Pachter said.

First things first! Pachter....really! You are going to start charging us gamers to play your COD games. Thats going to be your lost. With the way games are going to you are going to be the end of gaming. The way the American system is right now gaming is the escape from this world of darkness. We want to be free and be able to take are anger out during the day, have fun playing with friends, live life to the fullest; the way we cant in the real world, and freedom to not pay anymore. Pachter, you are going to be loosing alot from this choice. We all know those gamer junkies that cant stand not to play call of duty, but 80% of us aren't going to put up with this CRAP! You need to see the real picture and go back and look at how much money Mordern Warefare series made for you(And lets not forget that you destroyed by letting a good company go because of your ego and of course is sueing your BUTTS now which I hope you lose so you can learn from this.)
You really need to understand how powerful us gamers are. We give you the money to keep going on and making better video games. The fact that you are all charging fur us to play online just like the way homefront is doing it. Actually if you want to make that little income do what Homefront did. When you buy the game you get everything you want, but your not going to do that and your going to egnore the fans. I am dreaming of a world without this company in it. all the little companys that work for you are going to have enough and you are all going to fall. Infinty Ward souls aren't gone. They gave you a great Muilt. idea and without them Battlefield world be on top and you would be gone. Infinity Ward will have a different name and maybe down the road i would love to see them work with Tom Clancy games like Counter-Strike which I know everyone would love to see.
But Str8 to the point! No one here wants to pay two fees to play a game and for the PS3 people that think you are fine a good on this. You pay for nothing which is why you dont have what Xbox360 has. Ur servers are CRAP and no one cares about blue-ray. Ask me why all your major game companys are jumping to Xbox. They are tired of the hacking and loosing money. Arent you scared that money that you spent for PS3 left a back door open to your account. Xbox has made sure with the money that you spent that you are getting your moneys worth. To be said that you guys need to work with us on this if you feel that PS3 and CoD are being unfair. I know i just went on about PS3, just really didn't like it. If you like it good for you and you do have some good games that i like, but still SCREW this game company and everyone stand up and let them fall!! THE GAMERS HAVE SPOKEN!!!!

If I get "nickled and dimed", then I'm done playing Call Of Duty games. Already paying to use xbox live, so now if I need to pay just to play multi-player as well then finding a new game is exactly what I will be doing. If they make this game pay-to-play then the company is going to lose sales, because some people will not do pay-to-play. Yes, this may make them more money as for online income now, but game sales will follow quite a bit.

Im with everyone else its over for COD!! They charge 15 bucks for some crappy maps. Now a fee to play a game. Bad enough i pay for xbox live. PS3 here i come!! We all should have seen this coming.

Call of duty will lose more money then they will gain from this. I am pretty damn sure that many people will stop playing call of duty and play something else. I know I will stop playing. No way in hell am I paying 60 dollars for the game THEN paying 5 dollars a month just to be able to play it. And I don't play it everyday, it would be a waste.

Disagree....if Activision do decide to charge for MP, it would be a huge opportunity for a rival developer to steal marketshare from what is currently the #1 selling FPS. Once people move on to another franchise...it will be very hard for Activison to bring them back to CoD

Ok if that happens Call Of Duty will be no more. i polled 60 kids at my school who play Call of duty religiously and not one said they would pay. I mean 60 dollars is enough for the initial cost, xbox live cost 25$ (3 month) and now they want to add a fee to that?!?! ARE THEY STUPID? and that exclusive stuff is bull. i should be in no disadvantage if i dont buy the exclusive content. EXTRA MAPS are not necessary, if you wish to get added maps then pay but they should NOT add a fee to have full playability of the game. It's not like activision pockets are hurting anyway, this is just another scheme. i PROMISE if Mw3 or any other future CoD's have a stupid fee to play, then they will lose soooooo many sales. 60$ + xbox live is enough!
