Earthrise First Up In A String of Sci-Fi MMO Games On The Horizon

The new MMOFPS Earthrise launches on February 4, 2011. With its blend of open PvP, territorial control of resources, skill-based progression instead of class based and reliance on character gear as well as ability, this shooter is looking to carve itself a place in the hearts, minds and wallets of FPS players.

But it’s up against stiff competition in the online gaming world, both current and in development. Let’s take a look at the other MMOs out there with heavy scifi-flavored shooter action. Read on for the list of sci-fi gaming action that are swapping swords and sorcery for space and laser beams.

Hi-Rez Studio’s free-to-play Global Agenda started as a glorified multiplayer FPS when it launched last year and since then has blossomed into a full-fledged MMO. More social tools have been added such as global chat channels and friends lists. Playable content was steadily patched in with more missions for leveling, the introduction of raiding targets and territory expansions. PvP got some of the loving, crafting went from an afterthought to must-have and the word has spread. This is the title that Earthrise needs to beat.

Icarus Studio’s post-apocalyptic MMOFPS Fallen Earth is all about the combat. And a BFG is exactly what you need to survive in the nuclear wasteland that is the Grand Canyon of the future. Rifles, pistols and melee combat can be indulged either in first or third-person view. The intricate crafting system is designed to allow you to scavenge parts to build even bigger and badder weapons.  Plus, you can ride into combat on motorcycles and dune buggies to square off against the grotesque denizens that roam there. Does it get cooler than that?

CCP Games’s EVE Online is quite a different game. It’s not a first person shooter, it’s a take-over-the-galaxy-with-your-armada-of-battlecruisers shooter. Join the game’s version of a guild, collect resources and launch ship-to-ship attacks on rival guilds and unsuspecting players. The learning curve for the game is very steep, but those that stick with it quickly become addicted. With offline skill leveling, a fleet of customizable ships and, best of all, intergalactic piracy it’s a great counterpart to Earthrise’s character-based FPS-fest.

Cryptic Studio’s Star Trek Online was one of the hottest MMOs launching last year. With ship-to-ship combat, away team missions with phasers at the ready and both Federation and Klingon factions to play in, gamers were lining up to shout “Warp 10!” However, what players found was not as polished and ready as hoped. Since then Cryptic has been steadily updating the game adding achievements, diplomacy missions and the soon to be launched player-created mission system. Fans of the TV series and MMO players alike are now speaking highly of the title. And who doesn’t wish just once they could give the command to divert all power from the engines to the main deflector shield, am I right?

This is not the Star Wars MMO you are looking for. Or is it? SOE’s Star Wars Galaxies has gone through quite a transformation in its seven years of existence. It started as a sandbox MMO with a multitude of complex tools allowing players to tell their own story against the rich world George Lucas had created. But when subscriber numbers fell it got a total revamp. Character classes were simplified, combat got a total redesign and the game became more linear to entice new players aboard. Though the game has a modest subscriber base now, those that play enjoy the ground combat, ship combat and Jedi class. Not a bad way to spend your time if you’re tired of waiting for that other game.

One of the original MMOFPS games, SOE’s Planetside has the distinction of not limiting the number of participants in a battle. Instead of 1v1 or 5v5 matches, you get hundreds of players battling it out on the same map. Despite the appeal of mass battles, subscriber population has dropped so much that the game has only one server left. However, SOE has announced a sequel in the works, PlanetSide 2.

What lies ahead for Earthrise? Quite a few high profile MMOFPSs set in the future are in active development. One in particular is one of the most anticipated titles in recent memory.

Bigpoint Game’s Battlestar Galactica Online is a free-to-play, browser-based MMO going in to open beta on February 8, 2011. Much like EVE Online, gameplay is primarily of the PvP space combat variety with your goal being control of sectors and resources. There are some areas where you get to run around as your avatar, but that there is no combat involved in that mode. This title will appeal to anyone who’s a fan of the Syfy show as well as anyone looking for a new space shooter to play. You can side with the humans or the Cylons, but let’s face it, you know you’ve always wanted to fly a Viper.

Reakktor Media’s free-to-play space shooter Black Prophecy is getting attention not only for it’s action-oriented gameplay, but also for its gorgeous galactic backdrop. Pretty artwork aside, players can engage in solo missions, group missions or clan missions designed for 15 players at once. And the combat is fast paced with the ability to spin, roll and dive to avoid enemy fire. Throw in a wide array of ship upgrades, clan stations (think guild housing) and PvP goodness and you have yourself an up-and-coming EVE competitor. This is not an MMOFPS per se unless you count the laser cannon on the front of your ship, but its a shooter game none-the-less.

Yes? Please. Now. Thank you.

There’s even more futuristic MMOs of the FPS variety we haven’t talked about such as the upcoming PlanetSide 2, the battlemech carnagefest of Perpetuum and the newly announced Undead Online. Or how about the in-development Tribes Universe or rumored Fallout MMO? Earthrise is facing some solid competition in the growing MMOFPS world and it remains to be seen if it will come out on top or get ganked by bigger, badder and more heavily armed newcomers.
