EA Revenues Down $322 Million; Mobile, Digital Sales Continue To Grow

Despite solid performances from a number of catalogue titles and a boost in digital sales, Electronic Arts reported a loss of $322 million for Q3 2011, with total revenues topping $1.05 billion, the publisher reported to investors today.

EA posted net digital revenue of $211 million, up 39 percent over Q3 2010. Digital revenue for the past 12 months was $721 million, an increase of 38 percent over 2009. EA expects total digital revenue for the 2011 fiscal year to reach $750 million.

On the packaged goods side, EA saw five 2010 titles—FIFA 11, Medal of Honor, Madden NFL 11, Need for Speed Hot Pursuit, and Battlefield: Bad Company 2—pass the 5 million units sold mark. Madden NFL 11 moved 5.5 million units, while FIFA 11 sales have surpassed 11.5 million units. EA didn’t provide any specific figures, but it reported that sales for EA Sports Active 2 were “well below our expectations.” On the other hand, Visceral Games’ action-horror title Dead Space 2 has sold nearly 2 million units since its release last week.

EA saw mobile revenue grow 12 percent year-over-year, and reported a record setting quarter for iOS sales. EA is currently the top publisher on the iPhone, the iPad, Windows Phone 7, Blackberry’s Page 10 App World, Kindle, and among the top publishers on Android.

Facebook continues to be an attractive platform for EA as well. Madden NFL Superstars, FIFA Superstars, and Monopoly Millionaires are all currently available, while the newly announced Dragon Age Legends is now in beta. EA promises more franchises will receive the social gaming treatment going forward.
