Dead Space 2

I finally got around to playing a little bit of Dead Space 2, and, like the original game, the thing that stands out the most for me is the sound design. The silky smooth action-horror  gameplay is great and all, but the level of detail in the sound mixing and effects is just absurd. Strangely enough, I happened to play a few minutes of Limbo before Dead Space 2, and playing these two games back to back was like taking a class in sound appreciation. In keeping with this theme, what games come to mind when you think of great sound?

Games that have great sound? Recently, Amnesia: The Dark Descent. The game scary with how they use sound alone. System Shock 2 was also great. Play the game and you'll see how it influence Dead Space.

Sound I would have to say is the one thing overlooked in most of the general media of today, but it is the one thing I feel binds everything together. Take it out of anything you are playing or watching and it all goes away, everything. I was impressed with the fact that on Dead Space 1, the sound designers took into consideration the very thought of sound in space and how sound in various close quarters or vast areas sound. Flesh tearing as it is stretching, bones splintering and breaking under pressure as the body mutates. The sound of metal footsteps on metal grates as electricity arcs in some panel down the hall. Even when there is the lack of or no sound. If done at the right moment, your heart beat quickens and you get lost in the split second, that is sound design at its best.

Sound designers have a rough job of making something out of nothing. To bring a sonic reality to something that we would have no inclination of. A few games come to mind for great sound design, I wont get too crazy about this but some of these games can speak for themselves. The God of War trilogy, Uncharted, Medal of Honor, Heavenly Sword, Diablo, and Silent Hill. I have many games that sound and music are some of the best. But this is a part of the video game industry that is light years behind that of the movie industry, but that is a whole other can of worms that I could post some other time.

I hope I wasn't to winded about this but I am myself a sound designer and this is something I look forward to with any game. And what else can I say is that we live in a sound world.

The Battlefield Bad Company series has had the best battle sounds of any shooter. Switch the audio over to the "War Tapes" option and turn your surround sound up. You can feel the thump of the light machine guns as you blast away.

    I have to strongly agree..

walking down a corrider to hear a scurrying in the vents,

walking through the elementary school to hear a baby crying in a distant room

Ooh man this game is just the perfect spook, :D

So much Fun, and the sound, *shudders* Utterly Terrifying ^^
