Nintendo Talks Wii Zelda, The Existence Of Wii HD And Modern Warfare 2

Nintendo reported a 46 percent drop in quarterly profits this morning, attributing the fall on a decline in sales of the Nintendo DS. Basically, fewer people are buying the DS because everyone knows the 3DS is going to hit the market soon.

The bad news keeps coming, though: Nintendo adjusted predicted sales downward. Nintendo predicts the Wii console will sell 16 million units for the year to March, where previous predictions were for sales of 17.5 million units  It also lowered its DS sales predictions to 22.5 million units from 23.5 million.

Last night in Tokyo, Sony (finally) announced their follow-up to the PSP, a very powerful handheld console.  Although the drop in Nintendo's numbers are not related, it is interesting/unfortunate timing. Although we don't have a release date for the Sony NGP (New Generation Portable), next holiday season will see the two competing handhelds going head to head on the store shelves.

Personally, I plan on picking them both up, but if I had to choose, I'd pick Sony's NGP. What about you guys?

I'm picking up the 3ds for all the great games coming out on it, I haven't seen any games for the PSP2 yet so I am very so-so on it. Plus I'm a total Zelda fan, if it has a Zelda game on it I will get it.

Probably 3DS, but for now none of the two because I'm going to upgrade my rig. And I think the PSP2 will be really expensive and the 3DS offers something really new and more.

First off, if sales are going down becuz ppl are waiting for the 3DS, then obviously they are going up with the release of the 3DS. Second, i think PSP NPG's release is bad timing becuz once people are playing 3DS and buying the new games for it, i dont think most people would consider buying yet another system wich might be more expensive. But then again, some hardcore gamers will skip out on 3DS and wait for PSP NGP. Could go either way but as for me, im getting the 3DS.

What i dislike about nintendo is there so cheap when it comes to dsiware why can't they release the same virtual console titles and wiiware on the 3ds from what i heard there only carrying over gameboy titles i think with a system with that much technology wiiware and virtual console titles could easily be played on the 3ds i hope thats the case and they don't limit the 3ds if they do it will drive people to buy the new psp.

Nintendo can't be that surprised by a sales drop. They have over saturated the market with substandard games and endlessly retooled versions of their handhelds for years. It seems like the only thing that really works in their favor is the big first party games and the innovation of their initial systems. DS and Wii were both revolutionary, but the library was never able to keep up. This hurt the Wii much more as it was compared to the PS3 and Xbox; which it really wasn't competing against. Nintendo is very lucky, but seems to be headed the way of Sega. Great games on a system which over promises and under delivers.

Am I the only one who would love to see Nintendo become a game company rather than a home console company?

Yes, sales are down cause the 3DS is coming out. Also, eventually everyone who would want a DS will get one. Unless they keep putting out versions of the same thing, of course sales will go down.

I'm pissed at Nintendo and this is why. They spend so much energy pumping the 3DS with all this great stuff, while my Wii is shedding tears cause no one at Nintendo wants to put the effort into making it a great system anymore. While the Christmas season brought us pretty good games like Epic Mickey and Donkey Kong Country Returns, they have no plans to actually make games to not only be excited about, but to compete with the PS3 and 360. I'm sick of the Wii Shop channel as well and how bad the WiiWare games are. Who the hell wants to play a game about shooting chickens n e more that's not 5-10 years old? And have they ran out of virtual console games to put up on there? It sucks cause the Wii is the only system I have right now so I have to make due but Nintendo isn't making it easy on me.

NGP over the 3DS. I need an mp3 player and the psp gives me that. no converting or no need to worry it will go into sleep mode if you close it.(which you can't close a psp). 3DS just sounds like another DS : /.
    But tbh i'll get both.

I'll have to play the 3DS before I make a definitive answer of what handheld I'll buy. I just hate that I'm sure half of the games, ok more like 90%, are going to either be remakes of their OG games with a spin, crappy ports w. 3D, or just crappy games trying to get money from the 3D love. I'm more interested in the 3DS but the launch list is pathetic and I'm afraid it'll stay that way for a while. Plus I enjoy what PSP hackers have done and see the new Sony handheld following that. I can't decide... I really want to play both but living in a small-ish town might make that impossible.

Funny. Everyone at G4 has been talking down the 3DS because of its price as of late, but now you're saying you want the NGP more even though the price hasn't even been announced yet? And it's obviously going to be about $100 more.

The NGP is inferior for the same reason that the PSP was inferior--it misses the point of handheld gaming. Handheld gaming is about games like Pokemon, Professor Layton, Mario vs. Donkey Kong, Shantae, and, hell, LocoRoco. Sony wants to put out gimped versions of console experiences instead of an alternatives to them.

Oh, and it's also funny how you're suddenly interested in the financial side of things. Where were you guys a couple weeks ago when this broke?

I like how nintendo can release upgraded versions of their handhelds so there are 3-4 different versions of it on the market all at the same time. Is it annoying for anyone that has to have the latest device? yes. However I'm fine with being 2 handhelds behind with them.

Guess what Nintendo? When we KNOW a new system is around the corner, we don't buy the old one so much...oh no! Now they'll suddenly release a new version of their system right after they release it to bone us yet again! Dastardly bunch....

PSP2 all the way. A hand held with power of a console and two high quality analog sticks means that they can bridge the gap between portable and console experience. Throw in the fact that they are talking about being able to play a game on your PS3..and then continue to play it on your PSP2 on the go. I'm sold. That's worth more than all the n64 remakes in the world.

From what I've seen of the 3DS it looks very promising. I will need some more info on Sony's NPG before I make my decision (hopefully a price). As for now I'll just wait for the price drop in the 3DS.

Im getting both as well. but between the two. maybe ngp based on tech. But the name of the games mean nothing. it all depends on how the games feel and play on the thing. no doubt the graphics will be amazing. The dual analogs have me most intrigued. I hated the nub and I fear that Nintendos console is similar to that. Im hoping not, and if so, hopefully its improved over psp's. But Nintendo has the franchises I know and love. So it would be a really tough choice, at least right now.
