Our man-on-the-scene at Sony's press event for the unveiling of the NGP -- the codename for whatever the PSP's successor will eventually be called -- had a chance to chime in with the exact specs of the new device. Sleek, refined and loaded with tech, the NGP is no doubt looking to provide a quasi-PS3 experience directly in the palm of your hand.
Screen & Controls
The most striking feature of the NGP is its large 16:9, five-inch OLED touch screen display. It’s noticably larger than the iPhone’s 3.5” screen and features a resolution of 960x544. The back of the device contains a touch pad which can be used in conjunction with the screen’s touch capabilities for a unique control experience.
In addition to the touch controls, the NGP is the first portable gaming device to feature two analog sticks. Sony was eager to point out that these sticks bear a closer resemblance to an console controller’s sticks than the PSP’s “nub”. To enable motion control on the NGP, Sony has also included a three-axis gyroscope, accelerometer, and compass. The directional pad, action & shoulder buttons all appear to be similar to the PSP.

Game Media
The NGP will play games off a small proprietary flash based memory card. This card will store the actual game, additional downloadable content and game save data. Sony did not reveal if the NGP will have its own internal storage.
Cameras & Network Functionality
Front and rear cameras are present on the NGP, but currently, the resolution of these cameras are unknown. The NGP has built-in Bluetooth, WiFi and 3G network capability with GPS and WiFi location service support.
Battery Life and Other Specs
Sony states that the battery life of the NGP is comparable to, if not better than, the current PSP when running early development units, so consumers can expect, at the very least, an equal amount of playtime. Additionally, Sony stands behind their decision for the NGP to exclude 3D functionality, stating that the hand-held console is still evolving within its own technology and that the NGP reflects the exact experience -- at the exact right price point -- that Sony had in mind.
For some of the tech-ier among you, here's a quick rundown of what's under the hood.
CPU - ARM Cortex A9 Core (4 core)
GPU - SGX543MP4+
Dimensions - Approximately 182 x 18.6 x 83.5mm (width x height x depth)
Sound - built in stereo speakers and microphone
Check back shortly for more on the selection of games slated to hit the NGP when it launches during the 2011 holiday season.

I'm so getting this, I just hope it will be in my price range.

If it ran XrossMediaBar and looked more similar to the psp go, I would buy it in a heartbeat for any price under 400. This looks a bit clunky, but over all it seems pretty impressive. Nerdgasm.

Now, i never believed in the potential or feint idea of the "PSP" when it came out. Especially when i saw only one analog stick. But this seems to cover all the issues with the first generation PSP. And if what they're saying is true, that it has the same power as a PS3, then this shows potential.
I never gave a damn about 3D, and never will. It's just a fad in my opinion. I'll wait to appreciate 3D functionality as a factor in deciding to buy something, when 3D means an object is floating around my face.

to me it looks like it might have ability to be used as a phone.

I bought a psp 3000 just last summer, the buttons are already clunky, and the load times are FOUR TIMES LONGER. The psp was a hardcore game machine not made for hardcore gaming. I am never buying a portable PlayStation again.

most of 3G network devices come with sim card such as cellphones/smartphones even iPad.
Does the NGP comes with sim slot too? if not, how does 3G works for NGP?

I like how they tried to make the design nice and sleek but, the only real concern i have are the speaker placement. They placed the speakers right next to each of the joysticks. A couple weeks of game time could fill those holes with sweat, debris and dust. Not to mention the sound being blocked by your thumbs and causing irritating vibrations. I think they should have placed small sound bars at the top and bottom of the screen giving the user a richer sound experience. Sony never quite got it right on the last generations of the PSP. If you want an example, look at the first generation PSP's speaker placement.
Sony also, decided to stay with the round brick design, which is okay by me. But having an accessory that attaches to the PSP NGP that handles it like a PS3 controller on launch day would have given it a much more ergonomic design. With that said I think the changes suggested would have made the PSP NGP a much more physically attractive to consumers.

YES! This looks amazing, sleek, and the best part? TWO JOYSTICKS!! That was literally, my only problem with the first PSP, and now that that's fixed, I think it will be way better.

I went to Gamestop and the price is currently listed at $299.99 although I am thinking it will end up costing more like about $350.00

I really want it! But I can't shake the feeling there'll be a better version a year after release so if i have the willpower it would be smart to wait.

Finally, Sony is Steping it up a notch on their handheld. But its the early price what will probably give it an edge over the 3DS.
