The very first details about the release of the PSP follow-up, the PlayStation NGP, have traveled half-way around the world from Tokyo, straight into your brain. After weeks and months of speculation, Sony announced to a group of eager gamers that the PSPs successor, the NGP (short for "Next Generation Portable") will appear on store shelves during the holiday season of 2011.
Features will include...
- 5-inch OLED sceen
- Front and rear touchpads and cameras
- GPS functionality
- 3G speed
- Raised dual analog sticks
- SixAxis controls
- Plays NGM (or "New Game Media")
Sony is referring to the new user-interface for the NGP as LiveArea which will support the PlayStation Store, Trophies, friends, web browers, messaging and serve as a launching pad for other applications. The "Near" program will use the internal GPS to track your location and movement to provide information on what gamers are playing in your area.
Recognizable franchises heading for the new platform include LittleBigPlanet, Uncharted, Killzone, Resistance, Hot Shots Golf and WipEout. New titles include Little Deviants, Broken, Reality Fighters and Gravity Daze.
No price point was announced, but check back with G4TV.com for full coverage from the event in the hours to come..

I meant to say, buttons/joystick works fine as controls, I hope not every portable system from here on out has touch screen controls. And that if there is touch for the front and back, I see no way to hold it too without a third hand or some strange stand.

The double touch screen sounds stupid, buttons work well for that. And how the hell are you suppose to hold it and move your hands over it at the same time?
"The "Near" program will use the internal GPS to track your location and movement to provide information on what gamers are playing in your area."
Not only does that sound useless, it sounds bad. I don't want my console keeping tabs on me, and I don't care what gamers are playing in my area. I wonder if this is something that you need to enable/pay for, or at least something disable-able.
Even if both of these things are optional, it unfortunately adds to cost.
A thin portable player with OLED screen able to play playstation 3 games would be great enough, especially if also backwards compatible.

i want the NGP and i'm excited about it. but before i can scream like a little girl, i need to see some RPG's for it. like Final Fantasy, White Knight (maybe), Star Ocean, Valkyria Chronicles, the Lunar Series, and some new RPGs that we haven't seen before. and for it to do better than the last PSP, it need kid games. i don't mind playing a few (like Mini Ninja) but if it appeal to the younger gen just like it does for the hardcore gamer, then it will sell more. if you don't believe me... look at what Nintendo has been doing.
