With the release of the Nintendo 3DS fast approaching, one has to wonder how the new portable gaming system will sell. Are we going to see the same kind of fury we did for the Wii? Or will the high price tag keep people from cleaning out the store shelves? Such is the subject of this week's Soapbox. Adam took some time to dissect the many aspects of this new piece of hardware and try to figure out if lightning can strike twice. Will you buy the Nintendo 3DS on day one? Or wait to see if it's worth the investment?

249.99 i could but a console with a giganric selection of games with that money and have a lot more fun for that kind of price

continuing countdown:56 more days

I've preordered mine already. The price is just right for all that it has to offer. Graphically, it's comparable to that of the 360 and PS3. Plenty of comparison images out there to see that it's only slightly below if not right on par with those consoles. Add in 3D and everything that comes with that i.e. AR, 3D movies, 3D games, 3D pictures, 3D video recording in the future, and nothing else compares to this system. I'm confident that all those against it will see the light when it comes out.

Reasons why I'm getting the 3DS at launch:
1) It's going to sell out fast, plain and simple. The casuals are going to go after this like zombies would go after Einstein. If I ever get a console, I either need to get it at launch day, or I'll need to wait two years until I'm able to get one. I would wait for the next model too, but I've had horrible luck with getting systems late. I got my 360 Elite a week before they announced the new Xbox models. That's just not right.
2) When the inevitable new model does come up, I can always trade in this 3DS for the other one for a substantially discounted price. I'll be a bit sad that I'll have to turn in my launch day 3DS, but upgrades are upgrades.
3) As much as I approve over many of the PSP2's features (I don't understand the touchpad in the back, nor do I like how thick it is), it's those features that tell me it's no where near the <$300 price range. It just can't. $350 is the least I can imagine the system going for, and even then I think Sony is substantially losing money at that price. It's going to be "$599 US Dollars" all over again. I want a new gaming system, especially a portable one now that my DS Lite is getting pretty long in the tooth, but I'd rather take the strong punch of $250 for a machine that proved to be a great experience than take the inevitable heavier punch of a >$300 price tag for an unknown experience, even if it will be greater than that of the 3DS. I want my financial investment to be safe.
4) Non-issue: Friend works at Gamestop and is going to buy me SSF4 for it. Same would go for PSP2, but see #3
5) Even though the games I really want are spread apart in months, I'm mainly a PC gamer with a huge backlog of games I need to download and play, plus I'm busy with less important things like work, school, TV shows I need to catch up in, and family. By the time I get even 1/3rd of those games done, It'll be past spring, and the games that I want will be out in stores, so a launch window isn't as bad as it seems. Even better, it allows me to save up funds for these games, which serves me better than having all these great games shot right at me at launch. If so, I'd have a tough time just choosing the games I really want, let alone pay for them.

Because of bashing things like this video is why I try to stay way from G4tv and I am only here to convince some doubters to get the system!

I was wanting to get it on day one so my friends couldn't get it first and I feel left out but I think I'll wait this time. I'll wait until they get new colors, I mean do we need another all black DS?, and when the GOOD games come out. And I really wish they had the full black 3DS with the maroon inside top part. If they had that color scheme at launch I would buy it. :)

In my opinion I am an Nintendo-nite all the way. I have had every system since the SNES; including the Gameboy original. Not saying I don't like other systems. I do have a PS2 and an Xbox 360 and the original PSP. All of them are great, but lack what I love; which is the friendly environment of games that anyone from age 4 to 104 can play. No other company really has that.
Let's talk pricing! Yes 250 dollars is a chuck of cash for the average gamer.(note to the average gamer get a job) I think the launch line up is weak; not including Street Fighter 4. If you think long and hard when Xbox 360, the Wii, and PS3 came out each wer between 250 and 400 bucks. Five years ago #d anything was non existent and to think now we have it in our hands is worth it to me a hunk of my paycheck. I just will not really buy too many games.
To let you guys know Gamestop a is having like a trade in offer for you old DS.(I am not affiliated with them) The 250 dollar price may be high, but in the United Kingdom the bloody thing costs over 300 dollars USD.

Yeah right, I thought to myself as I heard Sessler's wrap up. He's just another fiend at the midnight launch, just like the rest of us. We can all be strong prelaunch but come the day before launch and we"ll all get the itch to own one of these, Sessler included. I know the type because I am the type. I've loved Nintendo long time and will continue to get suckered back in but I've always been proud of my decision to support Nintendo. I know it's endless reiterations of the same games but to me it's still the premier top shelf ish though. Games are always quality, never half arse regardless of the graphical implications and that's whats always mattered most to me as a gamer and I have Nintendo to thank for that. 3DS will not gonna get any cheaper anytime soon, might as well get one at launch if you want/need one in your life.
mikeBackin
I agree with him. I have yet to meet anyone that really plays a Nintendo product regularly. My mom bought herself a DS and that thing has been sitting for probably 2 years. Nintendo can sell hardware but their 3rd party game sells don't go anywhere. 250 is a lot to drop on a system designed for casual fun. It is a lot to pay for 3D, and 3D hasn't proven its a big draw yet. I could see Nintendo learning the lesson that Sony did when they released the PS3 with a huge price tag and no real titles to speak of, and Sony dragged in sales for a long while after that screw up. Then through on the fact that Nintendo has released multiple kinds of DS forms now. If I am a recent DS XL buyer and I already paid for a recent DS can you really convince me to buy another one? We will see how this goes in the long run.
shawnsation
I think the 3DS is a waste of time and money, nintendo has been coming up with a new DS every 10 months. I am frustrated because there are good games coming for the 3DS, but I dont want to spend 250$ when I can just stick with my DSi... Screw you nintendo!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gmegaman04
the ds came out with some awesome games im sure the 3ds will blow us away even more when i first seen kid icarus over the summer and the 3ds i was in awe! but that was before psp2 was even shown it will be interesting to say to least how the huge console wars will play out ya got to admit this is as epic as mario vs sonic in the old days i think owners of both systems won't be disapointed!

im so getting it as fast as posible it was almost imposible to get a wii for a couple of years. so im preordering the 3ds. the 3ds has everything a portable needs gyro, pedo meter thing... yeah im not good at remebering names of stuff. that walk past thing. camera. a portable 3ds gameing device is just so awesome 250$ is all right to me because this is like a portable wii.
Chrome262
With Kinect, and the lack of core gaming support, Nintendo needed something to keep them going, and the 3ds could of been it. For whatever strange reason people still by their handhelds (useless when smartphones do it all and better). But yet again they do not have the games to support it on launch, and if it takes the time the psp took to get them, it could have the same issues that Sony had in sales. Now the PSP2 will be even more expensive then this. Amazing how Sony and Nintendo are determined to make Microsoft's job easier.

Pre ordered, I will be picking mine up on day 1.

3:05 Oh G4TV, grow up! ;)
I don't buy portable consoles because I don't "play-on-the-go." But SSF4 is reason enough to get a 3DS. At least get it for my nephews.
Spybreak
I do agree it's an impressive piece of hardware and who wouldn't want to play the remake of Ocarina of Time but like what Adam said and the fact of how many quality console/pc titles will land just in March alone I gotta pass.
