Last week we told you about some of the horror games we were looking forward to this year. 2011 will offer several different kinds of horror games, many of which might not fit the typical horror game mold. Dead Space 2 combines classic horror with sci-fi shooter elements. Another game on the list was Catherine, a Japanese thriller complete with crazy ex-girlfriends and talking sheep. I get scared simply typing that. Then there are games like Mortal Kombat that are violent and gory but typically aren't considered horror. With so many types of horror games is there a specific quality you're looking for? What scares you the most, killer aliens in space, a dreamworld where if you die you never wake up, or gruesome violence?

Mascots. Anyone in a full-body costume, like the easter bunny. Not like pirates or ninjas, those kinds of costumes are ok.

The movie idiocracy. I mean think about it thats where humanity is headed and its terrifying. Also the first fear had a few good scares. The scariest game I've ever played was call of cthulhu on the original xbox, holy crap was that a terrifying game.

The idea that humanity will probably kill itself long before we cultivate other planets, my children dying before I do, and the probability that I will not see any kind of extra-terrestial lifeform in my life.
... oh and spiders.

I cannot wait for Catherine. I really hope it comes to the US.

Periods scare me, they're gross. Unless I've slept with the woman, then periods are a gift from god.

What scares me is stupid gimmicks like Kinect and 3D threatening to destroy traditional gaming.

you know what kind of freaked me out? Slappy from Dead Rising 2. Sure he was easy to defeat but that giant head gave me bad dreams for a while.
I also hate Killer Clowns. They don't just creep me out, they scare the crap out of me. For one their music is creepy especially when played very slow. Two, they act so innocent and cheerful even though they're trying to kill you. And they laugh too damn much. Seriously, what the hell is so funny? Whats worse their weapons are things that are supposed to make people happy. For example: The Joker has that flower that supposed to shoot water but shoots gas that makes people laugh uncontrollably and die. That clown from Dead Rising 1 was juggling chainsaws and blew up balloons with gas in it. And then theres the clown from Twisted Metal. He has a ice cream truck that shoots missiles.
I swear, If Dead Space 2 had DLC that turns all of the Necromorphs in to Crazy Killer Clowns, I would seriously scream like a little girl an crap myself.

I like Castlevania when it is not done anime style. Basically Castlevania 1 thru IV. However I would not call that a game that scares me. Its more of a game theme that has a nice quality to it and opportunity for a good story.
Not a fan of zombie games, so even though I picked up Undead Nightmare, not a fan of it so far. I guess it does beg the question why I picked it up. I love the main game and the expansion got good reviews.

It scares me that I may never be with my love Nikole! (fell in love after Nikole being Link)
But typically in movies and games what scares/horrifies me are the ones that can keep a sense of realism. For example 28 Days Later scares me simply because it is something that could happen the way it is present. (Virus infecting people and causing them to change and do what 'Zombies' typically do). Resident Evil was kind of creepy movie until the Black Rabbit or Dog that ends up scratching/infecting Alice's 'husband' show us.
Something like '"Run Like Hell" I found to be a very scary game (despite it not being visually dark or scary) because the story line is very believable (at least in a sense that you believe eventually in the future we will have space stations in far away regions of the Galaxy). For those of you who aren't familiar with 'Run Like Hell' it is almost the precursor to 'Dead Space'.
You play a retired War Hero who now lives in a Space Station with your wife Sam. You leave the Station to partake in a supply pick up or drop off or some random common occurrence but when you return return you find the Ship to be seemingly empty. Eventually you see Security Footage of a ship landing on the station and then a massive amount of aliens pouring out of the ship.
The aliens have a lot in common with the creatures of the Sprawl, they use Organic tissue to create new 'aliens', begin to (for lack of a better word) 'Terra form' the ships. I believe you even are suppose to separate the limbs of both but I'm not sure in RLH.
Anyway my point is that it is completely believable that once man does expand into space we may encounter another 'species' who can do these things. That's why Dead Space and RLH scare me so much, they have the ability to sneak into my mind and worm around there. Dead Space's story when it all becomes about a Magically reverse engineered Marker or whatever kind of turns me off slightly.
Now I do think it's important to acknowledge that there is a difference between something Scaring you and something 'startling' you. Like a cheap sudden blast of music in a Freddy Krueger crap movie. (additionally parts of the SAW movies scare me because all of those traps (and the idea that some psycho would put you into situations like that for his own pleasure) are completely possible.
I'm also scared of the Irish. (joking)

Trogs from the Pitt...the first time I saw one randomly pop out from around the corner, I screamed like a girl. And little sisters. They're so tiny and evil and they have big daddies to protect them....
