Silent Hill: Downpour

It's going to be raining horror this fall, when Silent Hill: Downpour gets its official release. Konami revealed the release window, as well as a few choice screenshots, the soundtrack and some details. Horror fanatics, take note!

The Downpour protagonist, Murphy Pendleton, will be terrorized in a number of locations, including the ubiquitous horror diner, some mountainous wilderness, complete with cable car, what looks like a cave a mine, and the expected claustrophobic, wrecked interior. Sit tight: Click on the scary picture above to see new screenshots for Silent Hill: Downpour.

What strikes me about the screens: The number of exterior versus interior shots. When I think of Silent Hill, I think of the inside, the claustrophobic school in the first game. Or the terrible locked room in Silent Hill 4. But judging from the title and these screens, I think we're going to be spending more time outside for the eighth Silent Hill game.

Are you as excited as I am about this game?

Just doesn't have the same feel as the originals. Homecoming was okay but you can really tell that it was made by someone else.

Homecoming had alot of outdoor stuff, specifically running to the next part...like all the way to some farm to meet a guy who gives you a gun

Hopefully Downpour is more generous with the ammo and health packs though >.>

Also, in response to both Ewoc and SirHellsing, there was a mall level in both Silent Hill and Silent Hill 3. The biggest difference is in the first game I think it's referred to as a "town center" rather than mall. However, if you look at different town centers, the term just tends to be a more wordy, fancy way of saying "mall."

I loved the games. I mean sure, none of them were perfect and probably the weakest one (in terms of puzzles and scares) was Shattered Memories. However, for the most part, other than the repetitive nature of Shattered Memories, which was a cool concept that was horribly executed or the horribly broken unkillable ghost enemies of The Room, which is only Silent Hill in name and tie-in references only, the franchise managed to maintain a certain level of creepiness while remaining fun. I hope that Downpour is everything that Vatra is trying to build it up as.

A bunch of outdoor content. Hmm, maybe someone over there liked Alan Wake a bit too much?

YES! I am very excited about this game. There are far and few between when it comes to horror games now days. It's even to the point where if a horror game is just subpar it is still fun to play becuase of our lack of options. Hope they nail the mood and atmosphere perfect in this one. On a side note i would like to add I have always repected Adam mostly on this site for his views and thought points, but as a father of two children and a avid gamer i've come to also respect Mr. Stephen Johnson, as a talented writer, who is also a father, and can make time for his job, his games, and most importantly his family. Thank you for the job well done from all the fathers out there. Much respect to you sir.

Yeah, the mall was the first location in SH3. I also agree with Ewoc about the exterior locations. Having many places to run away isn't as scary as an interior location where there's only two ways to run - back out the hallway or go forward a face the monsters.

This game better be damned good or I'll just give up on the SH franchise completely.

The Mall was in the third one, I do believe. But I agree with you on the indoor thing Stephen Johnson. I know when I'm running around the town, I'm not that scared. But get me in the school in the first Silent Hill and I'm pooing myself. Constantly.
