The Nintendo 3DS will have friend codes similar to the friend codes used for the Wii. Before you freak out and relive the nightmare that is Wii friend codes, Nintendo has made some changes that make using the 3DS friend codes easy and convenient. You will still have to type in the numbers unless you're on the same local wireless network, if that's the case you can simply click a button to swap codes. Keep reading for more details.
First off there will only be a single code per handheld console, not a new code for each game like we've seen with the Wii and DS. You will only need to exchange codes once in order to play together with all online enabled games. Another feature I appreciate is a hub that will show you which friends are online and the games they are playing, promoting a sense of community Nintendo was previously lacking.
What do you think of the 3DS friend codes?

I've found this website that let's you share 3DS friend codes. It's not that popular but it works well. The website is http://bynx.me

That is a welcome change right there. Here's hoping Nintendo does an update for the Wii to do that as well. Shooting high there, huh?

That's waaaay more convenient.
I do support the friend code thing because it's safer for them little kids.
I'm glad Nintendo is still using friend codes and having them for the safety of every one.

Looks like everything is finally catching up. That means the next Wii should have a friend list, which would be kind of cool considering all of those 'multiplayer' games.
JustTheBeginning
Why cant they just make a user name, translate those numbers into a set of easy to read letters, not that hard nintendo.
AntiquesRoadwarrior
What's that? No multiplayer? Ah, got it.

Well it kinda has a advantage, you can name yourself or your friends anything you want. There is no set nametag or gamercard or whatever. Thats the only advantage I really see though.
Papadockus
I like this, it's like Nintendo is trying to begin it's own PSN and Live. I think this has a lot of promise.
CFenix
still looks like crap compared to how easy it is to add a friend on xbl

The codes are still annoying but that is alot better. It at least makes it tolerable I still don't see why they don't go to the screenname system like Xbox and PS3. the hub is cool Nintendo is smart enough to include it although Sony for some odd reason never put it in the PSP. But cool the 3ds is sounding better and better.

So we will now be able to see what other friends are up to? That's great in my opinion. I love that little feature on the PS3, so it will be great that the DS will have it as well. The Wii always felt so....dead. You couldn't talk to people or anything. You also never really knew what your friends were doing. This is a small, yet massive improvement for Nintendo in my opinion.

Though I don't enjoy friend codes, this makes them a hell of a lot easier to deal with. I still wish you could just click on somebody and add them as a friend but this is still just a portable system. And I think that the hub is one thing that should be updated onto the wii.
Symicide
The friend code is still a fail.
Gromcracker
I think this is alot better then what we have now, thanks Nintendo!
