Valve seriously upped the cross-platform ante today by announcing that the PlayStation 3 version of Portal 2 will be the first console game to incorporate several key components of the developer’s online service Steam, giving players access to cross-platform co-op between PC/Macs and consoles, cloud storage for saved games, and cross-platform chat. And that’s not all.
If you buy a PS3 copy of Valve’s first-person puzzler, you’ll receive a free Steam Play copy of Portal 2 for PC or Mac. The Steam copy will automatically unlock once you link up your PlayStation Network ID and Steam accounts (Sorry, no gifting free copies to friends).
"We made a promise to gamers at E3 that Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 would be the best console version of the product," said Valve co-founder and president Gabe Newell in a statement today. "Working together with Sony we have identified a set of features we believe are very compelling to gamers. We hope to expand upon the foundation being laid in Portal 2 with more Steam features and functionality in DLC and future content release.”
Honestly, I would expect nothing less from Valve. It’s going above and beyond to finally put the nail in the “Valve hates PS3!” coffin, by bringing Steam, and everything that goes with it, to consoles for the first time, and, exclusively, at least for now, on the PS3. The term “game changer” comes to mind.
It’s not clear when Steam will make its way to Xbox 360, but unless it comes via a Portal 2 patch at some later date, the first opportunity will most likely be Left 4 Dead 3 and/or Half-Life 2: Episode 3 (or whatever it ends up being called), and, sadly, neither of those is anywhere near release. So if you want to enjoy Steam on your console and your computer, you only have one option for the foreseeable future. Is that okay with you?

The anticipation for Portal 2 just went up x100.

Hot damn, this is great news to me. The concept of being able to buy stuff on steam and play it on my PS3 is pretty appealing. Valve never fails to deliver.

You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.

The 360 isn't powerful enough to run this game, it's been mentioned before.

Seriously, what does Sony have on Newell? Probably have his family locked up in a basement somewhere.

I've been looking forward to this kind of news from Valve for months now. I'm hoping this is the doorway to indie Steam developers to get onto consoles and to AAA developers like Epic to bring powerful desktop to console gaming options to the fore. With the Source, Crytek and Unreal engines all currently pushing content through steam, their sure to include development tools that take advantage of Steam capabilities in future. Bravo.

This is just giving more momentum to PS3 and it's really cool to have cross platform chat and play. The PS3 is going to be an absolute juggernaut this year great games now with steam, it's just growing like a fat baby.

I wonder if PS3 owners are going to show Mr Valve the love he now is showing us? We'll see..!
I like the way you ended... refraining from saying the obvious. I wonder if it was the DVDXBox player if you would have done that or be like Stephen Johnson and say "Play it on your X-Box"
Oh well... PS3 is where it's at. Sorry X-DVD dead format Box!!!

Now see, they've finally given me a reason to buy a PS3 version of a cross-platform game. I've got both the 360 and PS3 but I tend to buy cross-platform games on my 360 since I owned it first. Looks like the "times, they are a changin".

This is a really good deal, but what's to stop me from buying the PS3 version just to play it on the PC. Then just giving my PS3 disc to someone else?
I'd really like it if there was some cross platform functionality between the PS3 and PC versions. Then I could play the co-op mode on different screens and not have to buy two copies of the game. It's not competative anyway, so there's no need to worry about Keyboard/Mouse advantage.

Don't own a PS3, and at this point, likely will not get one, but I must say... This news is just one of those "Wow, that's an impressive move" moments... Wish my 360 had this option. Stinkin' MS...
