Pets are little, furry companions. Pets teach you about chores, how to take care of someone, time-management, and about the cycle of life. While pets are awesome, responsibility isn't. I say avoid it as long as humanly possible. You're too young and free to deal with dog poop and cat food. Instead of wasting your time with boring real-life pets use the video game consoles you already have to find the virtual pet that's just right for you. Think of all the time and money you'll be saving by adopting a nice handheld alien or by allowing a gremlin monkey into your heart. Do the right thing, adopt a virtual pet today.

The Top Virtual Pets That Are Better Than Real Pets

Tamagotchi

Tamagotchis
are digital pets from Japan that fit in the palm of your hand. When you first get a Tamagotchi it starts out as an egg that hatches into an adorable little blob. Just like a real pet you get to name it anything you see fit, as long it's under eight characters. You have to perform certain tasks to keep your Tamagotchi happy, clean and well-fed. Playing mini-games keeps it entertained. As long as you don't over feed it and clean up its poo it will grow-up. If you aren't a responsible virtual blob-alien owner you're pet will die.

Assuming you manage to keep your Tamagotchi alive it grows from being a baby, to a toddler-blob, a child, teen, adult and in the end a senior-blob. The later generation of Tamagotchis can mate, teaching its owners about the miracle of life and the even greater miracle of virtual 2-bit sex. There have been over 40 different versions of Tamagotchis since its release in 1996. Video games based off the pets have been made due to its success but they can't hold a candle to the original.

Kinectimals

Kinectimals

One of the must-have launch title for Microsoft's Kinect was Kinectimals. Kinectimals might be the closest you'll ever get to having a real cat except these furries will actually return your affection. Using the Kinect motion-sensing camera you can choose which wild cat is right for you; choices include tigers, lions, panthers, and more. As you progress through the game more wild cats are unlocked like the sabertooth tiger. The gameplay involves obstacles courses, tricks and good old fashion petting.

Kinectimals is definitely for younger audience and won't hold the attention span of someone over the age of nine for very long. However Kinectimals does not come with a litter box, you know why? Because the Kinect-cats don't poop. They don't shed, they don't scratch, and they don't claw apart your favorite cashmere sweater you got at Macy's for 40% off!

EyePet

EyePet
is a game for the PS3 and the PSP that uses the PlayStation Eye camera. The PS3 version also uses the PlayStation Move to play with your pet. Your pet is a simian-like gremlin that looks very related to Monchhichi. The camera allows the pet to interact with you and the actual objects around you using augmented reality. For example if you roll a ball in your living room towards the camera your pet will jump out of the way, or by moving your hands you can tickle him, by clapping you can startle him. Feeding and grooming are both options as well.

EyePet was met with mixed reviews due to its wonky gameplay but it does showcase what the PS3 camera is capable of. If you're looking to be a lazy, non-committal pet owner and you have a PS3, EyePet is the simian-gremlin for you.

Seaman

Seaman
was a game for the Sega Dreamcast that took advantage of the console's microphone attachment. The game starts out with you, the gamer, being a new pet owner to the mysterious "Seaman." The Seaman is a fresh water fish with an eerie human face. Along with some human physical features it also shows human behavior when you interact with it. After feeding, caring and providing the social interaction it craves the Seaman will in time evolve into a frog like creature. A special edition game called Christmas Seaman was later released.

Seaman offers all the joys of having your own humanoid pet fish/frog but with none of the worry. No gross, smelly fish flakes, no semolina, and no burials at sea. On the off chance you're not sold already, did I mention the game is narrated by Mr. Spock himself, Leonard Nimoy?

Nintendogs (now with cats!)

Man's best friend has flaws. They bark, they poop, they bark while they poop. Owning a dog is an endlessly rewarding experience but it's also an endless amount of responsibility. And you know what, responsibility is for squares. Nintendogs is a real-time pet simulation game from the amazing mind of Shigeru Miyamoto. It uses the Nintendo DS touchscreen and microphone to play, groom, train, feed and even talk to your dog. Through gameplay you can unlock toys, accessories and supplies to make sure you have a pampered pup.

Nintendogs was such a successful series that it spawned several version including Dachshund & Friends, Lab & Friends, Chihuahua & Friends and Dalmatian & Friends. A Nintendo 3DS game is also planned and this time it will have cats. Nintendogs + Cats was inspired by Shigeru Miyamoto's recent purchase of a a cat

I currently still have my first Tamagotchi as well as owning two different versions of Nintendogs. As an owner of four real dogs I can say virtual pets are much easier to take care of, cheaper and quieter. What's your favorite virtual pet?
