If you’re in the New York City area next week, and you want to witness history literally being made before your eyes, then you’ll want to stop by the Sony Style store on Madison Avenue and watch as a group of steely souled Sackboy-hards attempt to set five Guinness World Records using Media Molecule’s forthcoming LittleBigPlanet 2.
The five records on the table are as follows:
- Longest marathon playing LittleBigPlanet 2
- Longest marathon playing a platform video game
- Most video game genres played in one video game in 24 hours
- Most user-generated video game levels played in 24 hours
- Most user-generated video game levels played in a marathon
LBP2 will also receive two world records simply for showing up to the event: most gaming genres and most player-created levels in one video game. The whole event will also serve as a release party of sorts for the new Guinness World Records 2011 Gamer’s Edition, which includes every conceivable bit of info about the previous year in gaming.
All of the festivities will be streamed live on the PlayStation Blog, which is music to my ears, because I have yet to witness a world record being set while wearing pants and I’ll be damned if I’m going to start now.

Don't they kind of get the "Longest marathon playing LittleBigPlanet 2" record by default on account of being the first to play it? Remember kids, the only records that stand for all time are the firsts!

How can anyone set a longest time playing LBP2 when no one else has gotten a chance to play it?

LBP2 is going to be awesome, but this is kinda stupid. Sony's marketing team can do better than that.

I'm going to be setting two of my own world records: Most time that Joey Woznicki has played LBP2 for in one sitting, and Most time that Joey Woznicki has played LBP2 for in one sitting while not wearing pants.
People have really gone a little crazy with the specificity of world records.
