Cheats and Walkthroughs
We all look back on the video games of our youth with pleasant nostalgia. In fact, some of our favorite games of all time can be over 10 years old. On that note, Adam Sessler was very pleased this week because his favorite game of all time, Ghosts n' Goblins, was released on the Wii Virtual Console. In this week's Soapbox you'll get a unique window into the gaming origins of Adam Sessler as he tells you the story of how that crushingly hard but masterfully crafted arcade game shaped his love for gaming, creating the man you see before you. Press play and find out how it all began. What's your favorite game of all time?

Even though I don't think you can fairly claim its better then the far more substantial games of today I think surrendering to nostalgia and picking Ghosts N' Goblins as his favorite game is a fair cop out for Adam simply because picking any modern game as his favorite would result in endless bitching and ridiculous charges of favoritism by console fanboys.
Ghosts N' Goblins was one of my faves back when I was playing it in the early 90s because the game was constantly throwing new environments and different enemies at you; but if you judge it by modern standards the extreme difficulty of the game combined with no save feature and a very limited number of lives is damn near unforgivable. While I don't mind extreme difficulty in a game I really don't think its justifiable to make a game so hard that your average gamer stands next to no chance of beating it even on the easiest difficulty setting. Thankfully the dominance of consoles and the death of arcades has freed us from the "quarter muncher" philosophy which drove so many developers back then.
PS: If I had to pick a favorite game ever I'd have to hand it to Mass Effect 2 as for my nostalgic old school favorite I'd have to go with Sonic 2.

For me it was Atari's Adventure in 1979 *i was nine* that seems to be the golden age, lol! Then I also moved to the arcade at the bowling alley *parents were in a league, it was happening scene in the 70's* with Battlezone and Tempest but the deal-sealer for me was Pitfall, hands down. I was such a gaming nerd that whilst a small fire was brewing in the kitchen I stayed to play through Pitfall until the firemen physical snatched me up and hauled me away, with controller in hand ;).

I'm glad he chose a game i've never heard of, thus, for once, I don't have to have an opinion.

The days of the N64 got me into gaming. The first game I ever played was Super Mario 64. My older sister, who was in her younger 20's at the time, had a friend who let her borrow her N64. She then had me over one day and showed it too me for the first time. Seeing Mario walk around the castle and jump into paintings because of ME controlling him fascinated me. I fell in love with the game. It drove me to eventually get a N64 for myself and I started trying out new games. Snowboard Kids, Beetle Adventure Racing, Mario Kart 64, and Paper Mario, made my early gaming days.
However, my all time favorite game is "Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door." Never has a game come close to giving me the absurd amount of fun I had with this game. It combined the lovable world of Mario into a fantastic RPG with an actual story to it that was not only entertaining, but pretty darn funny as well. Whether it was competing in the fighting tourney in the city in the skies, to exploring the creepy train, holy crap did I love that game. (My mind is blank at the moment and I cannot remember the names of those levels. lol)
Of course, I'd have to say that the paper Mario series as a whole is my all time favorite series. I LOVED that series before Super Paper Mario. SPM kind of killed it as I believe Nintendo went in the wrong direction with that one...but the 3DS Paper Mario looks to bring back my love for this series. Paper Mario for the N64 and the Game Cube define my gaming life. I dunno, I just loved those two games! lol

Adam forgot to mention how the second playthrough through Ghosts n Goblins is even more difficult than the first, so I understand what he's talking about. As for my first gamimg memories, I remember playing Pac-Man on the Atari 2600 at my grandparents' house.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Reagen won California in 1980 and 1984.
Hatred of him was far less then Adam is implying...even in Berkley.

the first game i remember feeling overly passionate about conquering would have to be Super Mario RPG. I mean come on, take the most recognized character in all of gaming at that point in time (1996) and then make it into an engaging RPG and my friends you have SUCCESS!!!! After that id say FF7 introduced me to what games could do in regards to story-telling (still in my mind one of the top 5 game stories).
then the 10ton hammer that is World of Warcraft hath blown my mind again on the story telling aspect, but i digress

You should write a Memoir.
You might be the next Frank McCourt.

My favorite game would probably be the original Metal Gear Solid. I played snes and the sega genesis, but the original metal gear solid is the game that got me into gaming the most.

Ah, being a dumb lil' kid...not being able to get past the first level of Tomb Raider or DKC. Good times.

Also started in arcades and played the hell out of my atari 2600 with the likes of pitfall, combat, haunted house, etc.,etc, Have to say favorite of all time though for me is easily castlevania 2. I still love that game and play it once a year at least.
