Blizzard Entertainment’s latest expansion World of Warcraft: Cataclysm has set a new PC sales record by selling over 4.7 million units since its launch last month. I'm not saying that our own Leah Jackson was responsible for at least half of those sales, but let's just say she "wasn't" if you know what I mean.
"We created thousands of new quests, introduced new lands to explore, and extensively revamped the game world for World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, making it our biggest and most ambitious expansion yet," said Blizzard CEO and co-founder Mike Morhaime. "We've been floored by the community's response so far, and we'd like to thank them for their continued passion and support for World of Warcraft, and for helping Cataclysm reach this incredible milestone."
WoW: Cataclysm became the fastest selling PC game of all time by moving 3.3 million copies in its first 24 hours of availability. The previous record holder was none other than the last WoW expansion, Wrath of the Lich King.
How many of the 4.7 million copies of Cataclysm did you buy?
Should the need arise, feel free to E-Mail me your tips, suggestions, and/or personal philosophies, or follow me on Twitter.

@G4: Does the 4.7 million figure include electronic downloads or just box sales?

The problem with the "we created thousands of new quests" is that most of them are in the 1-60 areas. The same areas that were actually part of The Shattering Patch 4.0 not the expansion. So the expansion itself, is actually rather small. It's patch 4.0 that was actually a pretty big patch, similar to how patch 2.4 added a lot of content.
Also, what they didn't mention is that most of those millions of copies sold were digital. Actual physical box sales were about 1/4 of that give or take.

Blizzard themselves state 3.3 million copies sold the first day.. Now 1 month in they report 4.7 million copies sold.. But still, with a subscriber base of 12 million then approx. 2/3 of the subscribers haven't bought it yet.... From a business stand point, it ain't good...

Well... 4.7 million sold sounds awesome, till you realize they've got 12 million subscribers.... That's not a good ratio is it?

Hay...they really did there homework with cata. Wow is thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish again.this expansion was exactly what needed to happen at this point in the lore and game mechanics. Also, its a mmorpg....and they put the emphasis on multiplayer...which really needed to happen because after wotlk that portion of the game really got splintered. The updates did not help either. They were trying to put humpty dumpty back together again, where a total revamp like cata was needed. So great job blizzard, the serious players appreciate the work and keep it up!
