Mark Wahlberg Confirms Uncharted Casting

More Uncharted 3 Details, Screenshots Released

To most of us geeks of the world, Nathan Fillion represents the perfect casting of just about any character ever, but perhaps never moreso than that of Nathan Drake, the wry, yet capable hero of the Uncharted franchise. And to those very same geeks, Uncharted represents perhaps the most appropriate, action-packed and ultimately imaginable game-to-film property circulating in Hollywood today. Too bad that when the Uncharted movie finally releases, it’ll have none of those elements whatsoever.

Rumors that Mark Wahlberg – whose performance is currently being bolstered by the exceptional Christian Bale in The Fighter – is a lock for the role appear true as the actor continues to discuss the title on the film’s press tour, practically confirming to site MovieHole that he is, in fact, attached to play the sardonic hero.

“David O. Russell is writing right now and hopes to direct,” said Wahlberg. “It’s myself, Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro.”

Now, that could all be premature if Russell isn’t yet a lock to direct, as any other director could substantially change the casting, tone and indeed the script itself. But as it stands, with Russell and his former collaborator Wahlberg namedropping the project with such frequency, it feels like the pair is giving both studios and fans the hard sell. Despite the fact that Russell has previously stated that he wants to turn the film into an adventure about a family of antiquities experts. We’re hoping he means “family” in that “your friends are your 21st century family” kind of way. Otherwise, that’d be a drastic change to the Drake / Sully / Alluring Female scenario of games past.

What do you think? Who’d be right for the Uncharted film? Or will Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception be cinematic enough to make a movie redundant?

No offense on Marky Mark, but Nathan Fillion is the right casting. Both good actors but Fillion IS Nathan Drake

So, De Niro as Sully? I can see that, I guess, I don't know. Not sure Joe Pesci would make a good Elena Fisher though (although he made a good love interest as a member of the Wet Bandits).

What sucks the most is that they could hire the ACTUAL people who voice and MoCap the characters. How cool would that be? Sully's real face attached to Sully's real voice saying real Sully filth about prostitutes 30 years younger than... than... On second thought, I may not have that much nostalgia for Sully.

It's a total mistake to hire a non indy director for this film. Any director with true LA cred is going to use their "unique vision" to "enhance" the story into a two hour studio produced, market testing approved bowl of crap stew. There is a reason that the first Indiana Jones and Star Wars movie was good and it's the same reason Scott Pilgrim vs the World was good. They were directed by talented indie directors. Edgar Wright even managed to do his source justice by actually following the books and it's author.

This film needs someone who's not looking to take a payout for making a film. It needs a director who actually wants to film the best damned Uncharted movie they can. It also needs an actor who truly loves the medium of gaming enough that he performs his role reverently to the character. That is why Nathan Fillion will always be the best geek actor around.

Mark Wahlberg is a good actor but he's not the ideal guy I had in mind to play Nathan Drake for an "Uncharted" film adaptation. I was hoping Sean William Scott would get the role. I think Mark Wahlberg is a little bit too old for the role and he's doesn't have a good history with video game film adaptations based on how terrible of a movie "Max Payne" was. Overall, I'm not too concerned about who plays Nathan Drake as long as the resemblance and personality is on point. My major concern is if the script is on point. If Russell's plans to actually do the film adaptation about a family of antique hunters than the movie is already a bust. Hollywood needs to stop ruining adaptations. It's been going on for far too long. If Zack Snyder can do adaptations right why can't anyone else?

Nolan North would be PERFECT for Drake, or Nathan Fillion. Essentially this movie is going to SUUUUUUUUCK SOOOOOOO HARD!

If it isn't good, I'll tell everyone to watch bootleg versions. I will not support this terrible film if they bastardize it.

So does Naughty Dog not have a role in the deliberation of the films production? I don't know what would be worse, Naughty Dog being a major factor in production of the film and not listening to fans comments or them not being involved in production and allowing these atrocities to occur to their golden goose while they sit idly by. I would sue people through the ears if they didn't allow you to play a major part in creating a franchise that stems from your creation and hard work. I realize more disturbing and sinister things could be at work here, copyright issues, contract agreements and other law rooted factors that keep the developers from having any say in how some studio cares for their baby. That doesn't keep it from being major BS.

I wonder what sort of damage a bad movie could do, if any, to the Uncharted franchise. Obviously the hardcore fanbase stems from the games themselves so a film could be a major disappointment but we can always return to the amazing game we all know and love because its still a great game and Naughty Dog knows how to treat us.

I hope something good happens before its too late.

Mark is definitely a NO! hes a great actor but to cast him as THE nathan drake is a big fat NO! Nathan fillion would be great, or go with me on this one: a ripped James Roday, yes James Roday he looks like him face-wise. I would rather take nolan north over Mark cause norths voice is what made Drake so badass

Mark Wahlberg? Please tell me this is a REALLY early April Fool's joke. Nathan Fillion would've been a very good choice as well, but I'd rather see Nathan Drake himself, Nolan North, star in a big-screen adaptation.
Don't get me wrong, I'll still end up seeing it in the theater, I'm sure.

Nathan Fillion should have got it. Hes awsome (Firefly was over way to quick.) He would have been perfect. He even looks like Nathan Drake.

I like Marky, but I want to see Nathan Drake, not Mark Wahlberg on screen, and that's impossible with a big name actor. For the same reason I didn't think Fillion would have been perfect either, though he may not be considered Big Name to the wider audience, he's certainly left his mark.

The biggest problem with converting a game like this into a movie is that I already have a very clear picture of what Drake, Sully, and Elena look and sound like. They're not words on a page or a blotchy little avatar, they are living, breathing characters, and I'm just not going to buy an actor trying to bring them to life on the screen.

They should change the title from Uncharted to Nathan Drake and the Funky Bunch.

Now I haven't played either of the Uncharted's, but based on what I've read about the games, Wahlberg would not be a good fit for the character. And while I'm keen to see Nathan Fillion in the role (big Firefly fan), I'm not sure he would get it because of the schedule of his TV show. That being said, bottomline, Wahlberg is wrong for the part and like someone else on here said, wait til Comic-Con. The fans will speak out and it won't be pretty.

Just eat the money and get Ryan Reynolds. I mean dear god, that man has the witty remarks down..have you seen his Deadpool?

I really hope they dont screw this one up. If they do, I will get down on my knees..yes, my knees, and BEG Naughty Dog to make an Animation of more Nathan Drake series. I mean seriously, the game is almost a cinematic in itself...

Please, don't let the grummy crap hands of Hollywood corrupt another beautifully done story for the sake of a directors e-P3n!$. FFS Directors, you screwed up Punisher (war zone), you screwed up Xmen 3, you screwed up Max Payne, when will you learn to leave the storylines the F ALONE AND JUST TELL THE DAMNED STORY FROM THE GAME!

Freakin A I hate Hollywood for those dips. H9.

The casting for this movie just doesn't make any sense. Marky Mark, really? He doesn't have the wry sense of humor to pull this one off. De Niro? Sully is a worn out old dude that talks about hookers non-stop, think about it. They should be looking for the Indiana Jones of our generation, that's basically what the part is anyways. A young Harrison Ford, if you will.
