Apple iPhone

The iPhone is coming to the Verizon network. According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, Verizon to make the announcement at an event Tuesday in New York City.

This development will shake up the entire cell-phone world, as the monopoly that AT&T has held as Apple's carrier is set to end, leading to competition for iPhone users' plans, as well as, hopefully, lower prices. Smaller players in the market will be affected as well -- the two biggest players in the industry will be offering the most popular phone, essentially freezing out smaller players, for the time being.

"This is the worst case scenario for the other carriers," said Roger Entner of Recon Analytics to the Wall Street Journal. "When Verizon comes out with the iPhone, there's only one carrier in the U.S. that will gain customers, and that's Verizon."

AT&T has been the exclusive carrier for iPhones since the device was launched in 2007, but it hasn't had that much competition from other phones, until recently with the steady creeping up in use of Google's Android phone.

Why is this a big deal? Android can do more than apple can, so why would you want that. Can someone tell me why you would choose the iphone over a high end android phone. I'm actually really interested.

I think I'll believe it when there is an actual press release from Verizon and Apple. The media has been saying this for what feels like a century.

The iPhone is a great phone. Many seem to love it, but I do have issues with it. I change the layout of my Android device all the time. Choose a new launcher and widgets. I make the device my own. My big gripe with Apple and the iPhone is that it always feels like its telling me what to do. I feel like I have paid for Steve's way. Steve tells me the best way to do things and how to do them. He tells me what should be on my phone and what shouldn't. He tells me how to view my content. When the iPhone first came out you guys didn't even have the option to change the background. The iPhone is one of the smoothest devices I have ever seen, but when that phone was introduced it only did one thing at a time. Anything can be smooth if it only doing one thing at a time. Granted you guys kinda have a multi task system now, but not one on the level of Android or Web OS.

The big difference between the two communities behind Android and IOS is that one drives the direction of their OS, and the other is driven by it. An Android user's experience is up to him/her. We have the major say on how the device is run. Android is always evolving and no one entity has the big say; not even Google, on where it goes. Apple does not give up control to the user, because Apple wants to make sure everything is their way because IOS will run smooth. You pick up an IOS device and you will never have to really think and make it your own. You don't seem concerned with what your iPhone does or how it progresses. Many iPhone fans just seem happy they have the symbol of an iPhone.

So I won't be switching to any iPhone no matter where it goes. Android is growing and just because it comes to Verizon it won't end Android. Something tells me after Honeycomb people will see Android very differently. I will give all you iPhone fans that Android often can be confusing and it doesn't offer the same pick up and use aspect of IOS. Android can lag or take a little to long to load, but now Android with the help of the lead from Web OS seems to be combining the best aspect of Android and IOS.

To sum up this really long post. Even if bought an iPhone it would never be my phone. It belongs to Steve. People will buy it, and put into their Macs. Play a few games. Browse the web and never ask for a choice again.

Thats pretty sweet. My voyager was dying on me over the summer so I upgraded to the Droid 2. I wanted an iPhone because i already have a mac and that would've been nice but AT&T's service in my area is pretty bad. I do think I would like an iPhone when my plan goes up, but Droid is just as good if not better. Vid Calling is available on some phones(not mine but some others) also, android can't tout 1,000,000,000 apps but for the apps they do have they are the ones needed...and mostly free. Angry Birds is free, but costs money on the iPhone. QuickOffice is free, and google voice, and other google apps are free too. Everything I need is available. iPhones are awesome, but Droids are just as good and I honestly don't see a lot of Android people on verizon switching anytime soon

I see this as more of a blow to AT&T instead of a blow to the Android OS. I figure that any person who has a droid on Verizon's network, will more than likely stick with it, especially if they have a significant amount of money invested into apps.

As for AT&T, anyone not satisfied with their service will probably jump ship and go to Verizon due to their network's reliability.

For me, it's not such a big deal. I don't have either service, and I'm very patiently waiting for the new dual-core Android phones. Pretty soon we won't even have desktop/laptop computers, we'll just have "larger screen" docking stations for our phone. Can we say Motorola Atrix?

If this is true then the Droid is done since Apple is way more popular then any other company involved with phones and music.

As long as VZ doesn't cripple the iPhone's guts like they have with all their other smartphones to minimize their consumer's data usage, I might think about switching.
