Microsoft Kinect Priced, New Bundle And 360 SKU Announced

UPDATED: Microsoft has since specified that by "sold" it meant "shipped to retailers, a distinction that has become more and more common as of late, especially when it involves hardware/software sales.

Over 8 million Kinects were sold worldwide in the device's first 60 days of availability, Microsoft announced tonight during CES 2011.

What is perhaps most impressive about this stat is that the company had sold 2.5 million at the end of November, a little over three weeks after its launch, which means that over 5.5 million Kinects were sold in the month of December alone.

Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business president Don Mattrick actually said back in November the company predicted to sell 5 million units during the 2010 holiday season. How’s that for an accurate forecast?

I see this 8 million as a combination of:
    1) Early adopters who always have to have the latest gadget
    2) One of the many MS fanboys who, like Nintendo fanboys, will buy anything and everything MS makes--the kind who defend MS to the death, regardless of how many RROD's or what they have to pay extra.
    3) the Casual Gamer--to this I say: How many casual Wii owners actually play their Wii anymore? Or have even played anything beyond the titles that came with it? How many kinects are just gonna gather dust in a while?

Frankly, I tip my cap to MS for fleecing people on a piece of tech which currently has only one good title (Dance Central) and the vague "promise" of something to come in future--until then, it's just a novelty.

    Hype and loyalty sold Kinect.

why would anyone buy a kinect now? there are hardly any games out for it (decent 1s at least) and i am willing to bet that the price drops to $100 by summer

I dislike this news. i was hoping they would sell exactly enough to break even so it wouldn't crash the business but also dissuade them from further foolish attempts at pathetic gimmicks like this.

I wasn't surprised at the DS's sales figures (which I'm a proud owner of) and i'm not really surprised by this either. There are 8 million people fooled into buying a fail piece of hardware over the holidays cause MS wants to get in on casual gaming. It's an okay audience to get at and try to limit nintendo's market. But realistically speaking, there were no decline is Wii sales, in fact it was the opposite seen on yesterday's post confirmed here on G4. Wii sold many units for the pretty penny, getting the console out as a whole and not a crappy add-on accessory. So in my opinion, kinect fails, MS should have tried making a better motion system that you could use in battle and action games instead of totally getting rid of the motion controller concept, it would have kept the core gamer in mind and they could have sold many more cause they kept the core audience in mind.

The reason why move exist on the PS3 is so that it levels its field and they can say they have motion. But it pretty much is the console for the core gamer,(no disrespect to 360) just look at move sales, not many motiontards there. Now don't get me wrong, i do like a few of the move innovations and not all are retarded, I would love to kratos and go around smashing crap, but then I'd prolly get tired after fighting a few bosses. In the long run MS may sell Kinect hardware units, but compared to the Wii which pushes the console itself, doesn't get MS as far in the game. It should stick to being bad @ss.

@Carlos: You speak the truth my friend. Kinect is highly annoying when thats the only thing motiontards recognize a 360 for.

wow Carlos0981, you sound like the tool. Real gamers know that great things develop over time, and to never count the under dog out. I bought a Kinect, and I am eagerly and calmly awaiting some stellar games that use Kinect technology.
Hopefully they will give an option in future games to play traditional controller style or using the Kinect. Oh and about the Kinect "sucking", everyone who has played it at my house loves it and says the graphics look even better than anything else on XboX or ps3. Take the time to appreciate something, and good things will come.

I wonder if there were any people out there that bought the Kinect as a present for someone that didn't own a 360. That would be hilarious.

I love my 360, but this Kinect thing has got to go. I hate the damn thing, every time I go over to my brothers house, and we get a group together, someone always wants to try it. So we have to move furniture around, move the coffee table, move the love seat and push the couch out of the way, just so a couple of people can try it for like 5 minutes, then go, "this kinda sucks".

Out of all the people that I frequent, in other words I am friends with, the only ones that have a 360 and have bought Kinect, are those with kids. None of my friends that are my age, and like me have no kids, have bought the damn thing, its pointless. I think it was the great Yahtzee that once said, and I quote, "as long as there is no physical feedback, motion gaming is not only a dead end, but its a dead end full of spiders".

I don't think that gamers, real gamers, are buying this thing, at least I hope they don't. Its gaming potential is virtually none existant beyond the casual genre. And if people really think that using Kinect along side a controller is the solution, then those people need to get some help. That would reduce Kinect, and all of its "innovation" to eyetoy status. Isn't that great, you'll be able to play your FPS using the same controller you've had for years, but now if you want to peek out of cover, go get a $150 webcam, yeah that does make you a controller, better yet a complete tool.

Dude just because hardware for casual games sell such as the Wii that doesnt mean they will drop making games for core gamers. Casual gamers casually buy games which isnt good business, if anything all these casual games are more of a way to convert people into core gamers over time.

Yeah, take that traditional gaming. I cannot believe it steven13132. You are excited that Microsoft is selling tons of Kinect. If this goes on, Microsoft and Sony will join Nintendo in this motion gaming craze. After that, traditional gaming might die. A real gamer should be nervous not excited.
