If you don't want to hear about possible new Fallout: New Vegas DLC coming out, then consider this to be your wasteland-sized spoiler alert. Apparently there is a lot of in-game chatter in the new "Dead Money" DLC about another courier, and a location referred to several times as The Big Empty. There's a lot of evidence to support this, so read on for the full story.
In the expansion, NPC Christine says she was rescued from The Big Empty by another courier who "Wore the flag of the old world on his back." If you happened to pick up the Collector's Edition of Fallout: New Vegas that came with the deck of cards, you'll notice that the 3 of Clubs (the favorite card of Penn and Teller) bears the image of Ulysses, along with the quote "The day I set my flag down, it'll be over my body or over a nation I believe in."
He also carries a flagpole on the card, and enterprising Fallout gamers found a rod-sized "Eagle Flag Pole" in the weapons folder, which seem to indicate it would have been his weapon, and would be obtainable at some point. Other conversations near the end of the expansion also reference a battle between two couriers in the Divie (the Grand Canyon), which may indicate that this storyline will run throughout the New Vegas DLC, culminating in this battle.
Adding further weight to the theory is an interview with Lightspeed Magazine, in which designer Chris Avellone said:
"There’s a character on one of the trading cards, Ulysses, who was supposed to be a companion. Oddly enough, tearing him out of the game was almost as hard as putting him in because companion scripts touch almost everything (and he also was a complicated character in terms of some of the hooks into the storyline). Maybe he’ll come back at some point. I miss him."
If I had to put money on it, and since this is New Vegas we're talking about, I'd wager that The Big Empty, or some such variation, will be the next piece of DLC for the game, and that we'll be encountering Ulysses at some point. On a slightly side note, did you ever see The Book of Eli? Because that's what I like to picture Ulysses looking like. Just saying.
What do you think? Will this be the next piece of New Vegas DLC?
