Pokemon

Yesterday Nintendo announced the release date for Pokemon Black and White,. It will be released in North America on March 6, 2011. Now that almost 24 hours have passed I've had time to calm down and think. It's time to plan. I've already decided to get Pokemon White while my brother will get Black. We always make sure to get different cartridges for optimal trading. Here's the real issue, what Pokemon do I start with? I was thinking about starting with Tepig. He's a fire-type pig, that's so metal. I've currently decided on Oshawott, the water-type, solely because it looks like a baby otter. Which Pokemon are you going to start with?

I'll think I will have to start with Oshawott, I have usually started with the fire starters on the first go through each new generation but this will be the third fire starter in a row that evolves into a fire/fighting type. You think they could have used a different combo this time around.

I used Tsutarja (Snivy) in my Japanese Black game, and I think i'll go with Oshawott for my American White, because the legendary Victini is Fire/Psychic and you get him early in the game.

I'll be honest and upfront, it's either Oshawott or Snivy for me. I've always chose Water type, and to be honest, I really don't like Tepig, at all.

I was like you, Nikole. I've always gone with fire type starters (except for Chimchar because it is the same as torchic) Once I saw that the Fire- type was going to be another Fire/fighting I decided to go with Oshwott because it is pretty original, its final evolution looks pretty cool, and I haven't gone with a water starter since one of my Silver/Gold playthroughs.

P.S. Sinvy's name should be Smugleaf. Dont tell me that isnt the greatest name ever

When I first saw the starters, I thought Oshawott looked the least interesting, maybe even a little pathetic (not to mention a name that makes little sense to me). Snivy is cool, but I went Grass in Diamond and I like to rotate, and I would've chosen Tepig due to sheer cuteness. But then I saw Oshawott's final evolution, and I thought it looked way more awesome than the other two's, so I'm going with that one.

Now I just need to pick between the male and female trainer. I hate the girl's fashion sense, but the boy just looks so... boring. Well, at least I can change how they look in multiplayer.

The cool thing is no matter which starter you get you get a elemental monkey to compliment that pokemon against your rival, which mind you have two of now. Pick Tepig get a grass monkey to combat against the Oshawott one of your rivals has and you already have Tepig to take down Snivy. No matter which starter you pick you're pretty set on the elements. Personally I'm going to take Oshawott because I always pick the water and then I end up with a fire monkey to take down Snivy. :) Win Win

I heard that the first gym in this generation will use the opposite type to your starter. Like, if you pick the Grass type, the first gym will use Fire etc. Since Fire type attacks can also burn a pokemon, and Grass types can often Paralyze, Poison, or put to Sleep their opponents, I'll choose the Fire type starter, so I'll only have to deal with the water type gym. I just hope the water gym leader does not have any Dual-Type pokemon that can still cause status problems, because that makes my planning meaningless. T_T

Water tends to be the best.

Not to harp on this series' stagnation, but this series has really stagnated. I need more than FOUR moves in an RPG. Would adding more break the game? I really doubt it. The running around and junk can stay, but we need a different story. "Go beat the gym leaders and catch ''em' all!" ain't cutting it anymore.
For the record, I loved these games back in the day, which is why I wish they would keep pace with the rest of the market.

water is always the best bet as starters... cause no matter which is the first gym leader water is the most neutral type against any type

I always abandon my starter Poke the second I get the flying poke that's in the beginning area.

Water starter is always epic and unique, therefore, my answer is obvious. Just need to get the other generation's water starters and I'll be unstoppable!

I might pick the water type just because its final form is pretty cool, but the fire is just as cool looking so its going to be hard

I have always chosen the fire pokemon in every generation. I'm just a bit dissapointed that this new one is a pig. I mean, isn't it a bit ironic? What if he turns himself into yummy bacon? I think I will name him Bacon.

Oshawott, because it's the cutest, although it grows ugly. Either way though the final stats of all the starters are pretty terrible, I doubt I'll keep it on my team forever. But still sticking with Oshawott, for cuteness. While I've purchased every Pokemon game in the series to date, as I love Pokemon, I agree the game play has changed extremely little since Red/Blue, Black & White has made the most balance and "making things reasonable" changes to date, even if it's still not that much. Personally, I think the biggest change that needs to be made is an overhaul of stats in all Pokemon to make more then a few Pokemon viable in the end. I mean, the fact that my favorite Pokemon isn't that strong compared to other Pokemon doesn't stop me from keeping it on my team nonetheless. But it bothers me that it's so unbalanced. That and the luck based IV system I despise.

To Hell with these nay-sayers. She asked which pokemenz would you pick. Not about how old or tired the series is.

Oh, and I shall pick Snivy...dat bitch got so much swagger. Just look at him, he's got dis.

I think at a certain point they need to stop trying so hard to create new pokemon and refine/update the actual gameplay a bit. I haven't played a pokemon game all the way through since Pokemon Blue back in the day, but anymore when I see all the new pokemon, half the time it seems like they're just looking around the office thinking "what can I turn into a pokemon?"

I'm half expecting to see a pokemon resembling a coffee mug in this next set of games. I will call him Muggle. Later he evolves into Thermo. He doesn't seem dangerous at first, but that's because there's no warning label.

I'm kind of surprised that this series is still going strong more than 10 years from when I watched the little TV show and played Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, and Silver.
