Our Five Favorite Games of 2010: Eric Eckstein

Eric Eckstein is the Editorial Director at G4, where he lords over the internets like Sauron. He enjoys collecting obscure action figures, all things Godzilla, and actually dressed up as Ming the Merciless for Halloween. True story.

Split/Second

I LOVED SPLIT/SECOND. Certainly one of my favorite racing games of the year, if not of the last few years, and even while playing Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, I found myself missing the ability to blow up everything around me. Track design was inventive and surrounded by a really solid TV-style presentation, and while later tracks seemed to regurgitate a lot of the design we had seen in earlier rounds, every race was still a complete blast to play. I truly hope there's a sequel in the works for this one. Please let there be a Racing God.

LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4

I love shooting terrorists and slaying monsters, but man, when I look back at this year, I really had a blast playing LEGO Harry Potter. A fantastic co-op game, except for the way it doles out achievements (curses!), it also was the best combination of LEGO style game and red hot license where everything made sense: the spells you could cast, the characters and their strengths and the Hogwarts hub that let you explore it all. True work of genius!

Left 4 Dead 2: The Passing

DLC grew up this year, and Left 4 Dead 2's The Passing was no exception: delivering a solid return to New Orleans, bridging the gap in the storyline, and re-uniting us with the characters we had grown to love from the first game. The Sacrifice was good as a payoff, but The Passing was a much more exciting set-up. If only Valve could figure out a way to get more UGC as DLC for the 360!

Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands

Yes I am crazy, but I enjoyed Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands infinitely more than Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. I suspect that's because it's way more focused as an action/adventure and less aimless with its narrative and exploration. I don't like the AC:B storyline and the open for the sake of open world design, so maybe that works against me, but I really enjoyed the simple storyline and accessible adventuring of PoP, and the new mechanics like freezing. It was a little too easy, but still a great return for a franchise that I thought lost its way with the previous title.

Enslaved

Enslaved is an example of where the story trumps the gameplay, yet without the game getting in the way (like Force Unleashed 2). It's absolutely thrilling to visit a game world for the first time, discovering it alongside likeable and incredibly well-written/acted characters. Enslaved may have felt on rails with its gameplay, but it was still fun to play despite it being effortless. Easily one of my favorite cinematic experiences of the year so if you like story-driven games, it's a must play.
