Our Five Favorite Games of 2010: Casey Schreiner

Casey Schreiner is a writer for Attack of the Show! When he's not busy hiking, playing video games and being from New England, he's busy hosting the wildly popular MMO Report.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm

I think they might take the MMO Report away from me if I don’t list this game, so here you go. Even though I don’t really have the time to devote to grinding these days, you have to respect the fact that Blizzard’s not sitting on its laurels with the One MMO To Rule Them All. Taking the world gamers have grown to love over the past six years and literally blowing it to pieces is a ballsy move. Also, the goblins have great accents.

Plants vs. Zombies HD

I bought an iPad. If that makes me a horrible person, so be it – because playing PvZ on that giant touch-screen is a hell of a lot of fun. PopCap continues to prove their domination of the casual video game form, as well as their domination over the credit cards tied to my Apple Store and Xbox Live accounts.

Costume Quest

Growing up, playing LucasArts adventure games like Grim Fandago, The Secret of Monkey Island, and Day of the Tentacle had a pretty strong impact on both my sense of humor and what I look for in video game storytelling. Psychonauts solidified my hero-worship of Tim Shafer and his XBLA Costume Quest was an unexpected treat this Halloween. Like those old point-and-clicks, the game play might not have been groundbreaking, but the charm and humor of the game world is undeniable.

Mass Effect 2

An enormous, sprawling space opera RPG from Bioware with complex shades of morality, incredible voice acting and a diverse cast of characters, each with their own agenda? Sign me up! I heard there was alien ugly-bumpin’ in this game, too, but I was never able to seal the deal. Space Chicks of the Future are so demanding.

Civilization 5

Civilization fans are, by nature, conservative in their gameplay – so it’s no surprise that the revolutionary aspects Civ 5 brought to the series have their share of detractors. Diplomacy isn’t as much fun as it used to be, and I do miss declaring war on neighbors because they had the audacity to reject my Taoist missionaries, but to me Civ 5 is a great leap forward in many regards – and warfare is finally both fun AND strategic! I’ve already dumped more hours into Civ 5 than any other game this year, and if history is any indicator – will continue to do so for years to come. Persians FTW!
