Limbo

Simply put, this is what a videogame should be. Simple controls twist around complex and even mind-bending problems. Without a word, this haunting story unfolds with every action and mysterious setting. This is the game I would put into anyone’s hands to prove that there’s meaning behind the medium.

Mass Effect 2

A little light on the RPG elements but heavy on action, Mass Effect 2 was the game that created a world of characters that I actually cared about. When it came down to making those tough decisions during the final mission, I actually had to put the controller down and think about my choices. Well done, BioWare

Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood

Who’s the man who sets up all the brothels in Rome? Ezio, that’s who. It’s not often that you play a game where you get to jump from a two-story house to assassinate a guard one minute and read through bits of text about the court's decision in the Citizens United case in the next. Plus, who doesn’t like wearing a cape?

Minecraft

Still in its Alpha stage, this one little game has gotten more hands on it than most games hitting store shelves. You dig, create, and dig some more. I spent the first night walled up in my own little house. By the fourth night in this blockhead world, I had my own castle as well as a mine that reached to the very bottom of the world.
