The MLB 11: The Show launch trailer has arrived, and it’s surprisingly intense. Sony San Diego Studios’ next iteration in its acclaimed baseball franchise promises to deliver an even more robust and engaging experience than that seen in the spectacular MLB 10: The Show, aka the best baseball game ever made (Sorry MVP Baseball 2005). It will be no small feat, but judging from what’s on display here, it seems the game is well on track to do so.

Intense, right? Was I the only one who kept expecting to the closing shot to be of a massive asteroid hurtling towards Earth?

If you're looking for tons a details about what's new in MLB 11, ESPN.com has a super in-depth first impressions piece , which highlights a bunch of the game’s new features including:

  • The long-requested addition of thumbstick control scheme for throwing and hitting
  • A new co-op mode, which, oddly, only supports play across two consoles. So while you can have two people on each team, both players have to be playing on the same PS3.
  • The new Challenge of the Week feature that lets players compete for prizes in online competitions
  • Improved Road to the Show mode (Goodbye career halting goals system!) and online play
  • Addition of 3-D and Move support

The PlayStation Blog has also announced that last year's cover athlete, Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer, will once again appear on the next cover as well. Also, gamers who preorder MLB 11 will be able to watch MLB.TV games for free for 30 days. There will also be a MLB 11: The Show Edition DualShock 3 controller released for $54.99 the day the game launches, and you can see it below. Personally, I would have liked to have seen the controller made out of actual leather and real stitching, but what are you going to do?
