L.A. Noire, Rockstar Games’ upcoming detective simulator, sports some of the most sophisticated facial recognition technology available in entertainment today, as demonstrated in this jaw dropping behind the scenes video. The facial animation tech at work in the game, aka MotionScan, has, until now, only been seen in major blockbuster movies, and, in fact, this marks the tech’s first appearance ever in a video game. And it’s not being used sparingly either; over 400 actors were filmed using MotionScan for in-game performances.

As you watch the video, pay particular attention to the all of the nuances and subtleties at play on the characters’ faces. The scrunching of their lips, the bulge in their throats as they swallow nervously, the ever so slight movement of their eyes, and, of course, the simply perfect lip syncing. Say hello to my most anticipated game of 2011.
