World of Warcraft: Cataclysm

The latest expansion for World of Warcraft offers gamers the chance to play as Goblins or Worgen, as well as implimenting a more dynamic quest system. G4's resident WoW-head Leah Jackson put many hours into playing Cataclysm, and is very impressed with the new races, more exciting quests, and overhaul of the game's locations.

"Blizzard did something that no developer has ever really done before in this expansion: they permanently erased their five year old content in order to bring their players something new. And what they’ve created, while a massive undertaking, has proven incredibly successful. Nearly all of the additions to the World of Warcraft are clever, tuned and fun, and different enough to invite exploration from the players. And in the end, we have to remember that playing World of Warcraft is supposed to be a game, and games are supposed to be fun."

Blizzard said they don't want to go too heavy on the leveling process because they want to focus more on the endgame aspect. Yes, you'll pass through the 80's really quick, but then you're gonna run into a block if you didn't take the time to gear up. If you don't meet a certain gear level, you can't get into heroics, and that means well over 100k HP, 10k dps, etc. You can level fast, but if you're not dedicated, you'll hit a block at the end and have a hard time getting any farther.

They also said, they want the leveling process to be less of a grind.

I agree with the article. I didn't care so much about leveling up. I wanted to finish the quest chain I was on. They also streamlined the quests in a very easy to follow fashion. No more searching for quest givers. You have your path to follow, and yes, there are optional quest givers out there, but if you stay on your path, you'll find some nice gear to progress you through to 85. Grinding just doesn't feel like a grind anymore. They made the game much more enjoyable.

The biggest mistake Wow made with Wow was to change the leveling progression to be too simple--I read a report that it took a person only 9 hours to level up from 80 to 85--That tells me the game is broken, too easy, and not that fun.I mean where is the challange. To me it should take a person 60 days of game time to go from level 1 to level 85,not 9 pittily hours from level 80 to 85.BRING BACK THE OLD VANILLA LEVELLING PROGRESSION BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think they added to the quest feel of WoLK; if you follow the quest lines of the new zones and read the lore they present you really do feel like you're progressing to something, not every quest, but a lot of the quest lines make if feel like you're reclaiming the world. Your character is involved in creating the lore of WoW and not just walking through the zones (vanilla feel). The new Homages (indiana jones) made me smile.

Dungeons... so far I'm not impressed. Guildies and I ran into the 5 man normals last night and in greens/blues they're still faceroll, 'what's the tactic here?', 'dunno', 'lets just hit him till he falls over and if we wipe, we'll adjust', 'oh, he's dead'. Perhaps that's attributed to us knowing BC content well enough that CC is still instinctual and adjusting to mechanics is 2nd nature (we're a very causal raiding guild (4 hours a week) that was still able to complete 90% of LK content).

Waiting on a few more to get to level cap to see what heroics have in store.

Tuning is still in progress so I'm still holding my breath. The node break yesterday was welcome though. Literally camping 1 node for 10 minutes and getting 200 obsidium meant engineering and JC capped quickly.

I love the new Cataclysm. I have been in WoW on and off since Vanilla and looking back at the game since 2004 to how it is now, I actually feel like I have been living a second life.

Adding on to what Leah said, the quests actually make you feel like you really are part of this whole event. This is especially true in Hyjal. To to mention my warrior can finally do what I have always wanted him to do. LEAP INTO THE FACES OF MY ENEMIES! WOO

blizzard gave me an 8day trial period since i had unsubscribed well over a year ago. i spent that time playing a new character up until about level 36 or so. The changes to the old world makes leveling more fluid and a lot more interesting, though when the trial was up I wasn't clamoring to renew my subscription either. I'd also have to think that there's going to be some story disruption when you travel from cataclysm-changed azeroth to level up in outlands and northrend since those zones weren't updated with cataclysm.

ultimately, i think i finally concluded that my WoW days are long behind me.

Honestly erasing 5 years of content of making it new means you are lazy and coudnt come up with a new idea for new zones and cities. Really WOW is stale at this point. Many people are 85 after a week and they are back to being bored. So for all this great work people are bored after a week. Sounds like a major fail to me.

This is like walking into target and noticing they changed the isle around. Always pisses you off because you knew where everything was before
