StarCraft II

The Videogame Deathmatch ballots have been counted, you, the readers, have spoken, and, after over half a million votes, your choice for the best game of 2010 is…StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty!

In the end, Blizzard’s strategy masterpiece managed to out maneuver Mass Effect 2, BioWare’s brilliant RPG and X-Play’s pick for Game of the Year, in a sci-fi-themed battle of epic proportions (at least as far as random video game popularity contests go). The final tally had SC2 on top with 55 percent of the vote. Close, eh?

StarCraft 2
managed to best some pretty formidable foes on its path to victory. Halo: Reach, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, Limbo, and Deathspank all found themselves no match for SC2’s legions of loyal and dedicated fans.

Well, there you have it. StarCraft 2. Videogame Deathmatch 2010 champion. Check out the final results page for all the details. So, what do you think? Thrilled? Appalled? Shocked? Indifferent? To the comments section!

So ME2 didn't win. Big deal. Let the PC gamers have their moment and stop your damn whining. I voted for Mass Effect 2, but I'm not crying over its loss. I think there's no shame in losing as long as you put up a fight, which is what we the Mass Effect 2 supporters did. We fought for our game, but came up short in the end. GET OVER IT!

QQ people are whining, QQ I have both, played both, and currently after seeing the ME3 trailer, playing ME2 for the 4th time over again. QQ. I voted SC2, all round great game. Tough match up for end, SC2 earned it going through tough games. ME2 also great game, no complaints and not taking anything from the game.

For anyone to say Mass Effect is the best game ever made is obviously needs to stop living in the present. Mass Effect has brought some game changers to the field but the franchise has failed as far as bringing new players into the fold. Starcraft is no perfect game either, but it has succeeded in bringing new players and innovating itself. I have played Mass Effect one and two and honestly there is no difference between one and two other then some glitches. So as far as 2010 goes Starcraft has rightfully earned its spot as top game of 2010. Besides if they didn't make a another Mass Effect for twelve years I think only a few still hang in there to wait, as opposed to Starcraft where we did wait 12 years and to tell you the truth it was well worth the wait.

I don't find this surprising, what I do find surprising is the fact that Starcraft 2 wasn't even a nomination for Game of the Year from the VGA's.

Mass Effect 2 is the better game by far. SC2 only won because of blizzard's fanatical basement-dwelling fanbase.

As a PC fanboy that I am; it says alot about a game only on PC which beat a game on PS3, Xbox 360, PC and xplay's game of the year.

Congrats to StarCraft II! It was a great game and really made me like RTS's again with all its variety. However, I did like Mass Effect 2 more... oh well at least it came in second out of all those games. Congratulations to both games!

The finale had two games I played a lot this year. Both are great games, either would be a great for number 1.

@ all those complaining about Huskey et al:

If a game is good enough to inspire people to become commentators on it, to have a legion of loyal fans following both the game and the commentator; then perhaps that game is actually very good. Let's be honest, very few games have international tournaments, prize money in those tournaments and commentators (outside of the gaming media sites/magazines etc.). Has ME2 inspired this kind of following? Is it possible that ME2 could inspire this kind of following? Arguably no to the first and possibly for the second. SC2 has yes as both answers.

In addition to this, the margin (according to G4) was 55%:45% in SC2's favour. That means that, had every single person who voted for ME2 also got a SINGLE friend to vote then ME2 may have won.

Out of curiosity (as in I'm not actually making a point here and this is a genuine question): What were the sales figures for ME2 and SC2? Depending on the stats (and ignoring the people who bought and played both and may therefore vote either way) it would have been prety conclusive as to which was going to win the VG deathmatch i.e. if everyone who had bought each game voted (again, not including the people who bought both and may have voted either way) then the sales would have been a pretty good indicator of which had the most fans and, therefore, who would have won in the situation where everyone voted.

I call bullcrap, yeah I loved starcraft and starcraft 2 is great, but does not compare to the amazing narrative, visuals, or gameplay that mass effect 2 provides. sorry.
